Wine Compatibility

Post by UnitedAnarchy »

I have been reading up on ReactX, And DirectX implimentations, Along with some Wine stuff. What I want to know is, Why doesn't wine run all of the windows programs? What specifically stops it? And please give some examples of one that doesn't work and the reasons why. Also, Why don't they work perfectly? Can you give me some examples of this too? I've been looking at this http://www.winehq.org/status/directx Is that part of the reason? Has wine increased in compaitibility in the past and will it continue with new updates? Is the common reason programs don't work just that you didn't install the drivers or something properly? Or that wine just doesn't support it? Again, Examples please.

Wine has been steadily improving in compatibility since about the time many of its users were born :-)

win32, and directx, are moving targets, so wine is usually a couple of years behind the latest stuff.
Certain features that are a whole lot of work to implement (like DirectX) take longer.

Also, the wine developers just work on whatever app they care about, or whatever bugs have really good bug reports and are easy to fix.

All of which means that Wine will always work well for some Windows apps, and poorly for others.
The circle of apps it works well for is steadily (well, jerkily) increasing.

People who need something that runs all apps perfectly are best advised to use real Windows.

People who only need the apps that Wine already runs well can use Wine with a certain degree of confidence.

People who want to help improve Wine have plenty of opportunities to do so.
