Wine 1.0 release date to clash with Firefox 3

Post by Bamm »

According to http://wiki.winehq.org/WineReleasePlan the new release date for Wine 1.0 is set to June 17.

However the Firefox 3.0 release date is also set to June 17.

http://developer.mozilla.org/devnews/in ... firefox-3/

Their release is planned to be high profile and they even plan to set a Guinness world record for downloads in a single day!

http://www.tuaw.com/2008/05/30/help-fir ... ld-record/

With this, I fear that the Wine release would be drowned out in the euphoria and excitement for Firefox 3.

I respectfully suggest, therefore, that we move the Wine 1.0 release date to another date besides June 17.

This way we can attract more press and attention.

I hope others agree with my observation.

Does Firefox 3 run in Wine? Just change Wine's announcement to say "Runs Firefox 3." Problem solved. :D

Sorry I didn't get the joke. Firefox 3 runs in Linux. I don't think we need Wine for it.

Ok. So how does this solve the problem on the clash in release dates? Will this generate more press for Wine vis-a-vis Firefox 3?

15 years in the making, I doubt that Wine is planning a silent release. A project this big should not share the limelight with another big project getting a major release.

You asked (or wondered, rather) why we would want to use Wine to run Firefox - that's why. I didn't say I was offering a solution.

Note June 17 is the targeted release date. Depending on what happens Wine 1.0 could be release before or after that.

This year is Wine 15th anniversary some time. Yes no one is exactly sure when 15 years ago wine was started. All we know for sure it was 15 years ago. So 1.0 is kinda due/overdue.

Also we here at Wine really don't see 1.0 as really a major change.

Only major change it that its had a lot of old bugs fixed. There are still missing features still other problems. So if it don't get great media coverage so be it. People will come here looking to get windows application to run so we really don't need to advertise.

Also note 17 is the source release. Most platforms that wine has builders for will have package ready for the 20 of june. It is not on conflict with Firefox really. Its good that Firefox is then it should stop people coming for binary packages before they are ready.

June 17 is a Tuesday. I suggest that they release 1.0.0 on June 20, a Friday, which is the day of the week releases are normally done.

This way, Wine can steal some of the attention away, since that will be 3 days after the Firefox 3 release.

Hmmmm...

My initial reaction to the original post was "So?".

But I now think Bamm's right - I hope 1.0 does get released on a different day than FF3 because the developers/maintainers really should get more limelight for the hard work that's brought Wine this far.

Keep up the great work!

So, are they still planning to release on June 17th, or will it be moved to June 20th? I hope to hear from someone in the know. Thanks. :)
