where are replies found?
New to this and posted question about Hardwood Solitaire 3 and have no idea where to look for any replies. Where do I find them?
Re: where are replies found?
They should be in the same thread you started.benjie1 wrote:New to this and posted question about Hardwood Solitaire 3 and have no idea where to look for any replies. Where do I find them?
When did you post your question? The only thread I can find about Hardwood Solitaire is almost two years old.
where are replies found?
Thanks. Guess there are no replies. I did post about 2 years ago on the same solitaire game and it worked with the help of forum members. Setting wine (v 1.2) back then to windows 98 in wine cfg worked, but now now. My recent post was on the 23rd or 25th of June 2012. Thanks for your help.
Re: where are replies found?
I found your post in the mailing list archives. The gateway between the forum and the mailing list was shut down on June 19, so it never appeared here.benjie1 wrote:My recent post was on the 23rd or 25th of June 2012. Thanks for your help.
So you don't have to repost it:
In the Appdb I found a previous problem I had with Hardwood
Solitaire on 8/16/10, wine v 1.2 Upgraded to 1.5.6 and tried running it
but nothing happens at all. Tried setting it to windows xp, 2000, 95,
98, and global. Still I get nothing at all. The installer is
hwsoliii.exe and it did install but won't run. Using Ubuntu 12.04 32 bit
and installed wine from winehq, downloads, as user. So things went OK
til I tried to run it. BTW, it did eventually run great back in 2010
with your help
First, read the sticky at the top of the forum about Ubuntu 12.04.Forgot to give the web site for the solitaire game. http://www.silvercrk.com Hope someone can help get this working. Tks again.
Second, the link you provided was to a download for Hardwood Solitaire IV, but hwsoliii.exe is Hardwood Solitaire III. Which one are you trying to run?
where are replies found?
Hi Read the sticky on Ubuntu 12.04 and didn't find anything related to the Hardwood Solitaire 3 problem. Sorry about the link. I thought it still had the Solitaire 3 there. Anyway, that's the one I'm interested in. The exact same problem occurs with LMDE update4 gnome 3 cinnamon desktop. I have the hwsoliii.exe on the desktop in both LMDE and Ubuntu 12.04. Did a cd to desktop and set winecfg to Windows 98 in both distros but no luck. Tried in terminal wine hwsoliii.exe and got nothing except a start to install and then the error that it has to be shutdown. Link from pastebin http://pastebin.com/EfNWszZ8 Posted it on 6/25/12 in [email protected]. Thanks Bob
Re: where are replies found?
Did you try the workaround in https://launchpad.net/bugs/978678? That bug affects many apps and games, not just the one it was originally reported for.benjie1 wrote:Hi Read the sticky on Ubuntu 12.04 and didn't find anything related to the Hardwood Solitaire 3 problem.
Sorry about the link. I thought it still had the Solitaire 3 there.
I found a link to download a free trial for the old version buried on their site: http://www.silvercrk.com/downloads/solitaire_iii/1/
I downloaded it, and it works fine on openSUSE 11.4 out of the box.
The terminal output you posted shows it's crashing on start, which could be the ptrace problem. You need to try the workaround in the above bug report. I'd also suggest reinstalling to a clean wineprefix.
That's the mailing list. As I said, it is no longer linked to the forum. You can post questions on either or both, but the threads will not be connected.Posted it on 6/25/12 in [email protected].

Ok thanks. I will try that workaround and if it fails I'll do a clean wineprefix. Strange (to me) that it works in opensuse 11.4 and not in Ubuntu and LMDE. But then I'm a newbie. BTW, there is a game in Hardwood Solitaire 3 called Archway. No one that I know has ever won that game. I can give you my name and the serial number if you want to play it, and if it's legal of course. Thanks again. Bob

Got hwsoliii.exe to run in Ubuntu 12.04. It installed and ran the solitaire game but there are 30+ icons on the desktop now, from the install. Can't run Solitaire 3 from wine or the terminal or any of those icons. They do nothing and I checked permissions for the 3 icons that are labelled with .exe. And wine or the terminal just re-install it. Thanks.
Re: where are replies found?
If you're using the Ubuntu Wine packages, make sure you have updated to the very latest one for 1.5.7.benjie1 wrote:Can't run Solitaire 3 from wine or the terminal or any of those icons.
http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=30859
If you do have the latest package and it still doesn't work, post terminal output.

Read the bug report you posted but truthfully I don't understand what it said .Started again with a clean wineprefix (v 1.5.7) in Ubuntu 12.04 and it failed to install after starting. Terminal output is here.

Make sure you have the latest 1.5.7 package; a new one came out yesterday.benjie1 wrote:Read the bug report you posted but truthfully I don't understand what it said .Started again with a clean wineprefix (v 1.5.7) in Ubuntu 12.04 and it failed to install after starting.
If it still crashes, please download the demo from the link I posted and see if it also crashes on your system. It's possible that the demo simply doesn't have the problem, but the full version does, and that's why I can't reproduce it.

Not savvy enough to know what you mean by packages. I have wine 1.5.7. I assume packages are files included in the version. Also don't understand the bug report or how to do a workaround. Will figure it out if you can help. Thanks very much. Bob
Re: where are replies found
Packages are the .deb files your package manager installs. Have your package manager check for updates. If you don't know how to do that, ask on the Ubuntu forum; I don't use Ubuntu and can't help you with that.benjie1 wrote:Not savvy enough to know what you mean by packages. I have wine 1.5.7. OK. I did do the software updates as a routine but I'll check with Ubuntu forum. Same problem exists with openSuse v 12.1. This sure is more difficult than back in 2010 wine v 1.2 when I got hwsoliii.exe working (with help) but less problems. I'll keep trying. Thanks. Bob

Not sure where to download the demo from so installed the stable version 1.4.1 from openSuse install/remove software. The hwsoliii.exe runs great with a few glitches:
1. wine icon (on desktop) does nothing. got it from /usr/share/applications
2. Terminal- runs installer again. not the game.
3. There are about 30+ icons all over the desktop - annoying, not sure if I can delete them or put them in the trash
4. One desktop icon runs the game. solitaire.exe (appeared on install). can't use hwsoliii.exe since that only installs it I guess.
Qustion can I get rid of all the icons except the one in # 4, above and not have any problems. ( LOL )
Thanks.
