Diablo 3 - Perfomance was ok but it's not anymore.

Post by winetabasco »

Hello all,

When i finally managed to run Diablo3 game thru wine, it was working perfect. No stuttering at all.

I've finished the Diablo3 on normal level and now i'm playing it again on nightmare level - but i doubt that's releated to my problem.

Since few days when i run diablo via wine i get incredible stuttering, the game is nearly unplayable but _nothing_ changed in wine's configuration / Diablo3 game configuration and my hardware specs remained the same !

my wine is 1.5.5 with these patches:
1. http://source.winehq.org/patches/data/86603 - Subject: [PATCH 1/4] server: Move completion from async object to async queue.
2. http://source.winehq.org/patches/data/86604 - Subject: [PATCH 2/4] server: Update stored completion information even after an async IO is queued (try 3).
3. http://source.winehq.org/patches/data/86605 - Subject: [PATCH 3/4] server: STATUS_MORE_PROCESSING_REQUIRED does not indicate that an async operation is complete (try 3).
4. http://source.winehq.org/patches/data/86606 - Subject: [PATCH 4/4] ws2_32: Use STATUS_MORE_PROCESSING_REQUIRED to indicate that the AcceptEx async is incomplete (try 3, resend).

my PC is: Debian 64bit, 8GB RAM, Core I3 3.2Ghz, Geforce GTX460

Can someone help me to solve this stuttering problem? it's heavier when more monsters appear on the screen so the game is unplayable anymore but still, few days ago there was no stuttering at all (only when i played with 4 online players and we had tons on monsters on screen, still the stuttering was very, very light).

Thanks upfront.

First thing to try is wine-1.5.6 without those patches, I suppose...

as you suggested, i've compiled and runned diablo using wine 1.5.6 - the problem is still exactly the same with that version...

Looks like stuttering is a known problem on Windows, too:

http://us.battle.net/d3/en/forum/topic/5235703994

One workaround they propose is putting the .MPQ files on another,
faster, drive and leaving symlinks behind...

But hey, at least you don't need those patches anymore!

oh, good find, seems i'm not alone and it's not wine releated, i think it's because of the latest Diablo3's patch.

and yeah, no need for wine patches anymore !

thanks for your help.

I just finished Hell Mode, and I am in Inferno Mode. Inferno is not that Fun as others because you are not gainging Level (Better Gear, More DPS, More Armor).

Would a USB stick qualify as a faster drive?

Well it depends on the USB stick. It may be enough, just try it.

You may also try a ramdisk where you could put the files into. Also it might be enough to put only some *.MPQ files into a RAM disk. I guess someone has to test it.
