Star Craft - Brood War problem

Post by ShwangShwing »

Hello,
I have problems running Star Craft - Brood War

System:
arch linux 64 bit
ati radeon x1300 pro
open source driver (xf86-video-ati)
KDE 4.8.2
wine-1.5.1

Problem:
The game starts but it's extremely slow. It's unplayable. It is slow even in the menus (on the animated menus it is slower).
I've tried the changing the registry keys like DirectDrawRenderer and it doesn't help. I've tried running it in virtual desktop. No difference.
I've run the game long ago. I used gentoo back then and it ran fine.
Somebody know a solution to this?

Try proprietary driver. Open source drivers known to have major performance issues.

I would like to avoid that as the proprietary driver requires downgrading of xorg. And my vga is old and as I see it is not well supported by the proprietary driver.
I may eventually try that but as I already said I don't like the idea of downgrading xorg.

Then upgrade your hardware to recent nvidia card. There are no other options.

Sorry to revive a dead horse here, but I'm having the same issues and I was wondering if the OP or anyone ever found a solution to this.
I'm using:
Ubuntu 12.04 Unity 2D
Core 2 Duo 2.1 Ghz
Intel 4500MHD, Ubuntu proprietary driver
3 GB RAM
Wine 1.5.10

No such thing. Intel only has open source drivers, and they are generally inadequate for running games in Wine.

Sorry, kind of a newbie on the Linux front. (Recently switched over from windows). Anyway, I'm having the same slow down issues the OP described. It's kind of playable but the framerate issue is all too noticeable and can often affect the gameplay.
