Oblivion on Mint 12 wine 1.2.3 no opengl support compiled in

Post by ederwil666 »

Hello all,
I'm pretty much a newbie in linux, and I'm trying to play The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion on Linux Mint 12.
I installed wine-1.2.3 according to the readme file (I hope).
command:

Code: Select all

wine ~/.wine/drive_c/Program\ Files/Bethesda\ Softworks/Oblivion/OblivionLauncher.exe
gives:

Code: Select all

err:wgl:opengl_error No OpenGL support compiled in.
err:d3d_caps:WineD3D_CreateFakeGLContext Can't find a suitable iPixelFormat.
err:d3d:InitAdapters Failed to get a gl context for default adapter
Direct3D9 is not available without OpenGL.

That version is old. Upgrade.

Direct3D9 is not available without OpenGL.
That's your problem. Recompile Wine with OpenGL support.

Your problem is very obvious. To run DirectX programs in Wine, OpenGL
must be compiled in. It is not. Where did you get the Wine Package
from?

I got it from http://www.winehq.org/download/
by downloading the latest stable release: Wine 1.2.3.
I chose the stable release because... it's stable.

I did visit Wine Wiki and I couldn't find the instructions regarding my problems.

Stable just means the branch is rarely updated; It has nothing to do with performance.

Instructions for compiling Wine are here: http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#head-719d19c ... c2a301ce52, but it really would be much easier just to use the Ubuntu packages.

The last update to the stable release was to update translations and
that was over a year ago. There are no bug fixes applied to the
stable release tree. That is one of the reasons we advise using the
current release candidates as we are looking to produce the next
'stable' release.

Sorry. Demisio gave the proper location for building instructions.
However, it would be much better to use a distribution release to
reduce the number of 'required packages' to be installed.

Install wine_gecko-1.4-x86.msi. Follow the instructions here: http://wiki.winehq.org/Gecko

Partial success, but something is completely wrong with the sound, and the game crashes after the King intro clip. also, the intro clips freeze about every second, but at least the game started to some degree.

Guys, what command do I use to make the terminal (bash?) copy all messages into a text file, instead of printing them in the terminal window because there are so many of them, that the first few screens are overwritten with the new messages?

I'm using this command to start the game:

Code: Select all

wine start OblivionLauncher.exe
and then I'm getting tons of error messages, so that's why I'm asking.

The FAQ has an entry on how to produce a logging file.
http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log

I'm using this command to start the game:
Code:
wine start OblivionLauncher.exe
wine start OblivionLauncher.exe >& <log_file_name>.txt

should work.

BTW, fixme's are NOT error messages. They advise of missing or
incomplete functions.

Did you follow the instructions in the AppDB for this game? http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=7506

Regarding sound, if you are using PulseAudio, make sure it is version 1.1 or later and Alsa is version 1.0.25 or later. If you are using older versions, disable PulseAudio before running the game.

You haven't mentioned what graphics card/driver you are using, but be aware that you need the proprietary driver for whatever card you have, and if it's not Nvidia, you may still have problems.

I tried to follow the AppDB instructions. The instructions don't indicate what types of values I should be adding to the registry, so I assumed they were of DWORD type, and that the base was decimal (versus hexadecimal).
After I added the "VideoMemorySize"="256" entry, there were no changes, and after I added the "OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo", after the king intro clip, my whole system froze, and I could only do a hard restart, so after the restart, I deleted the Offscreen entry, and now only the game crashes, but the system is fine.

The instruction say, that for ATI (I have ATI Radeon x700 graphics card) the bDoImageSpaceEffects=1 in Oblivion.ini should be changed to 0, which I did. By the way the name of the file is: Oblivion_default.ini, not Oblivion.ini. Still, that didn't change anything.

After the restart, when I open the Oblivion_default.ini file to edit it, I see coded text. I think it's because I did the hard restart, and I remember I chose the option to encrypt my home directory during Linux Mint 12 installation, and that's where my wine and Oblivion is, so I'm guessing it's the encrypted ini file. I'm not sure how to fix this.

I also don't know what sound I'm using - I don't know how to check this. Same goes for graphics card driver.

How about a full log file? http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log
describes how to do this.

Please post to a site like pastebin if the file is more than one or
two screens in length.

ederwil666:
The instruction say, that for ATI (I have ATI Radeon x700 graphics
card) the bDoImageSpaceEffects=1 in Oblivion.ini should be changed to
0, which I did. By the way the name of the file is:
Oblivion_default.ini, not Oblivion.ini.
That sounds familiar to me. *g* In my case, the file Oblivion.ini
resides in ~/My Games/Oblivion and not in a subdirectory of ~/.wine.
Still, that didn't change anything.
Small wonder. Look into the above mentioned location for Oblivion.ini.

Changing the correct ini file didn't affect the game at all.
