Setting Virtual Memory For Wine Apps
Setting Virtual Memory For Wine Apps
This is a spawn of another issue partly solved by hack:
http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t ... highlight=
In short, I couldn't run Manga Studio with Wine in a Live Session (Live DVD), unless I signed in as superuser, which then pops up a virtual memory control allwoing me to set memory and launch Manga Studio fine. This control doesn't pop up when in non-su mode, and nor do I get the virutal mem warning (see other thread for non-su terminal output)
How can I do this for a non-super user mode? I coudn't find the settings in Wine to do this. Or, is it possible there is more to it than virtual memory when running as non-super user?
Is this a bug that should be reported?

What is popping up this virtual memory control--the app, or your Live DVD? Wine has no such control. If the popup is coming from the app, and works in Windows but not in Wine, it is a Wine bug.winepunk wrote: In short, I couldn't run Manga Studio with Wine in a Live Session (Live DVD), unless I signed in as superuser, which then pops up a virtual memory control allwoing me to set memory and launch Manga Studio fine. I just happen to be running live now, just installed Mange Studio while being signed in as su.
The first window:
Title:Manga Studio Debut
Text:Failed to create the virtual memory.
the destination drive for creating the virtual memory does not exist or there is insufficient capacity.
Check the folder path to create a virtual memory in the Preferences.
I hit the ok button, and I get the next window:
Title: Preferences
Here I choose the virtual memory folder location and set the amount. I hit ok and the program starts.
Is this Windows, Wine, or Manga Studio Preferences?

The problem might actually be that you ran Wine as root (super-user)I read the wiki on wineprefix, I don't quite get it. When I ran the program as su, it set up a new .wine directory in root.

Re: Setting Virtual Memory For Wine Apps
Let me clearlify the whole situation. I will include only relevant details I know.
The latest stable version of Wine 1.2 found in Mint repositories would allow me to install but not activate Manga Studio Debut 4. Activation requires two things: a code and Manga Studio cd detected in cd drive. I had to go to Wine 1.3 to get the cd detected during the activation wizard. I was then able to start the app fine with 1.3.
I remastered my distro at that point with Remastersys. I burned and booted. I was not able to start Manga Studio in a Live Session. (I need to do this for security and proprietary reasons).
With some troubleshooting Live, I was able to install and activate and run when I used super user to install and run Manga Studio. Realizing this worked, I remastered a new copy with Manga Studio installed as superuser. I ran it live and now Manga Studio launched.
What happened differently when I launched live was that only root was given the opportunity to change the virtual memory for the program (through a dialog). I never got that warning as non-super user. The program just exited with errors I've printed more than once in the previous discussion http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t ... highlight=).
This has led me to think, if and only if it is Wine's virtual memory being adjusted, then I maybe I can do that for non-super user. So my question is, how to change the virtual memory for the non-admin user so program will start in Live Session? Or, if not a virtual memory problem, what direction do I need to go in to trouble shoot more?
I'm also puzzled that the wiki tells me never to run wine as sudo, but I actually found a use for it. A program was launched under Wine that otherwise would not launch Live!

Sine the other thread is locked, i respond here. There are three issues and that is why I created three threads.
1. Running apps live
2. Setting virtual mem
3. Sand box issues
In order to help others organizing the central error/problem by thread allows people to get to a solutution faster through search.
In response to the Running Live comments made by guest, the cream of the Linux crop have it as a standard. (Does Wine support that standard or is it disregarded?
Im not looking for someone to drop in and make off topic remarks or say its broke and walk away. That is not helpfull and is an assumption without proper investigation. I havent been properly questioned to justify such conclusions. Overgeneraling does help get me in the right direction to research a fix.
Im beginning to think help cannot be found here. That brings the value of the forum down.
If Wine does not support Live apps, Ill excuse myself. There will be no need to discuss further.
(I hate these smart phone keybords)
