MS Office 2010 Home - activation and licenses

Post by cviller »

Hi WineUsers,

I have been very pleased with experiencing how well office 2007 works on wine (1.3.35-37 clean prefix) and I can see that there is also good progress on 2010.

I have been considering buying the home license for 2010 so that I can try it out. However, I know that MS have some licensing scheme where you get to install it on 3 computers and that's it. Does anyone here have some experience with how this plays out with wine? Can I install it multiple times on each computer (if my prefix gets corrupted)?

I don't know, but I would not recommend spending money on any app with a limited number of activations for use in Wine.

Yes that was exactly why I think it would be interesting to know if anyone has some experience with this. If e.g. the machine "magic key" is placed in machine.config and I can copy that from a broken prefix to a fresh prefix on the same machine and still be able to use the software.

Even if someone could verify that it works now, a future change in Wine or on Microsoft's side could make it not work.

MS Office 2010 Home - activation and licenses

I would check the appb before buying. I know there have been posts in
the past about some of the newer MS Office stuff not working at all in
Wine. I'm not sure if that is one of those or not, but better to check
first.

Yeah, I have been following appdb and it seems like there is still some way to go - but progress seems to be happening fast. And I have googled quite thoroughly to see if there was any discussion on this license and activation concern, but I could not find anything.
