Thoughts on a possible solution to get the Sims 2 running.
I am trying as hard as I can to find a solution to get the Sims 2 to work. I have a new copy on the way and everything I hear says the game wont play in wine.
Now I had an idea, the last time I ran the Sims 2 was on a Mac. I know for a fact the the Mac version is just in a Cider wrapper, I know because I've opened it before. Now I'm sure EA didn't dump thousands of dollars to rebuild the entire engine just for the Mac release. So is there anyone out there who thinks it may be possible to extract certain files from the mac version and use them to overwrite the files in the Wine installed version? Cider is nothing more than a nice neat pre-configured version of wine, so something has to be possible. I have access to a Mac to try it out, I just gotta wait for the game to get here.
Also I know the whole issue with running Sims 2 is it is not able to get all 1024 Vertex shades that its requesting. Is there a way to software emulate the remaining shaders? similar to how the Direct X 10 in Windows XP patches software emulated all - well most - of the Direct X 10 effects.
So anyone up for some trouble shooting with me? The Sims 2 was Epic, much better than the Sims 3 (which I actually have running beautifully, ironic.)

Ok, I'm currently checking out a program called "3D-Analyze" it looks promising. If anyone has more experience with the app send me some pointers, because I'm just going to go through and try all the options and see what happens.
Heres a Link:

Just as a side note, the 3D-Analyze app runs just fine in wine, but I was not able to extract it, it is in a self-extracting rar file. I just booted up XP in Virtual box and copied it over.

OK well I tried 3D Analyze with no luck, of course I don't now allot about it either. I'll keep trying different things in My free time to see if I can come up with something. Unfortunately My enthusiasm for getting this game working doesn't seem to be shard by many other people here. I'm Subscribed to this thread so If anyone does happen upon this thread I will be sure to check it out, even if its further down the road. Lastly, of course if I do manage to get the game to run I will come back and post a full write up.

I just went to the page for Sims 2 on the Applications Database and could not find ONE bug that was filed for this program. I realize that Sims 3 does work and that Sims 2 used a Cider wrapper around the Windows code, but if you expect this to be fixed, bug reports have to be filed for what does/does not work along with some additional information (like log files). I don't know where this program lies in the 'fix this' area as I'm not a DirectX code developer, but it appears problems are related to missing functions in this part of the Windows API/ABI code base.relik1989 wrote:OK well I tried 3D Analyze with no luck, of course I don't now allot about it either. Why on earth are you checking the AppDB for bugs instead of bugzilla?jjmckenzie wrote: I just went to the page for Sims 2 on the Applications Database and could not find ONE bug that was filed for this program.
The Sims 2 not working is a longstanding bug. http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=8051

My point exactly. We tell folks to go to the Applications Databasejjmckenzie wrote:Why on earth are you checking the AppDB for bugs instead of bugzilla?I just went to the page for Sims 2 on the Applications Database and could not find ONE bug that was filed for this program.

I've never told anyone to look for bugs in the AppDB, and the space you're talking about is to add links to the real bug reports in bugzilla. It's helpful when people remember to do that, but many don't, so I would never recommend relying on the AppDB to find bugs.jjmckenzie wrote: My point exactly. don't waste time going over what other's have already tried.
Again, I'll look at the bug report and link it back to the AppDB in
this case to prevent time waste in the future and to let folks know
that a problem exists that causes the Garbage rating for this game.

True. However, this particular problem should be there so that peoplejjmckenzie wrote:I've never told anyone to look for bugs in the AppDB, and the space you're talking about is to add links to the realMy point exactly. We tell folks to go to the Applications Database
