How to switch workspaces from WoW? Tried virtual desktop.

Post by dusf »

Wine 1.2.2
Xubuntu 11.04 (xfce)
HD Radeon 4650

I have just installed a new video card and I am unable to switch between my virtual workspaces while World of Warcraft is running.

With my old card Nvidia 7300 LE I was able to do this if I wanted to check something on the internet and then go straight back into the game etc.

I have emulated a virtual desktop of size 1280x1024 and I also have tried with WoW's internal options 'run in windowed mode' and 'maximize'.

The game appears to flicker for a split second and then jump with me to the different workspace.

Is there a workaround?

If I keep Windowed mode checked, but uncheck maximize I can play it and navigate workspaces but I'm stuck with my xfce top panel visible, and a border too.

When I run it in windowed mode without being maximized and right click the titlebar and select fullscreen everything works properly, but I would like this to be automatic.

Using gDevilspie with a rule to fullscreen the WoW window, and with windowed mode activated but maximized checked in WoW's internal options I can now run it full screen and switch workspaces without it following me but there is a slight graphics corruption down the bottom of the screen showing my the bottom of my irssi client running terminal on the workspace I moved from.

Please see screenshot.

Please also note I am testing the game on on a private server until I can confirm the game will run as it used to a few months ago before re-activating my official subscription at a cost.

Any ideas?

From the beginning I have been allowing the window manager to control and decorate the windows in winecfg.

This is too old, upgrade.

Enable virtual desktop and set it's size to the size of your screen. However keep in mind even inside virtual desktop Wine might still grab your mouse. It's a know bug.

Done, 1.3.15 now.

To clarify I have been from the beginning, 1280x1024 being the size of my display and whenever I alt+tab+left/right cursor to another workspace the game follows me.

When you say grab my mouse do you mean grab it so it would follow me to another workspace, or are you just talking about when I try to alt+tab+cursor out, fail, and can no longer click back in the wine window?

Is it better for me to have 'Allow DirectX Apps to stop the mouse leaving the window' on or off?

Problem still ongoing with 1.3.15.

Still way too old. Wine is up to 1.3.34, which is 19 updates past
what you have.

Where are you locating your Wine updates?

That version is also old; the current development release is 1.3.34.

I mean pointer won't leave the game window. Or will jump right back into it.

Update Wine, this option is gone and replaced with another one.

I had been getting my Wine updates from Ubuntu repos but I just added the WINE one and am now using version 1.3.34.

The problem is still ongoing.

I must stress again at this point I was able to navigate workspaces perfectly with my old Geforce 7300 LE - and that was six months or more ago.

Tried with and without the new option 'Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen programs' - no change to problem.

The set resolution of virtual desktop smaller then your display size.

How much smaller? I tried with 1024x768 and it changed nothing, only the quality of graphics.

The game still follows me when I switch workspace.

Try different window manager. This not supposed to happen.

Maybe try playing at retail servers, not WoTLK private, hmmm? :P

I'm kinda suprised that pirates are not punished here in any way.
And this is just one from many examples.

That kind of shit is making whole linux community look bad tbh.
Shame on U, WINEHQ moderators!

P.S. Changing windows manager to Unity or Gnome should do the trick.
