World of Warcraft Launcher.exe keeps crashing

There's a small update to World of Warcraft today. When I run launcher.exe under Wine, it keeps crashing.

I read on this forum that doing "winetricks ie7" would solve the problem, but at the end of installing IE7, the setup program says:

Setup was unable to install the latest Windows Internet Explorer updates. After you restart your computer....etc. etc.

It gives me a restart now and restart later button. When I clicked the restart now button, I got a message saying that Regsvr32.exe had crashed. I did "winetricks ie7" again, and although I got the same message at the end, i didn't get told about a Regsvr32.exe crash.

I then ran Launcher.exe again and got another crash, but a different one. Whereas before it seemed very much like a crash in Wine and I got a dump in the terminal window I was running from, this crash seems more like a crash on Launcher.exe and I get the Blizzard "there has been a crash do you want to report it" window.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I just tried the launcher to test this on my machine. It did crash with
a 'send to Blizzard' bug report that was a generic memory error and I
did not get any errors in terminal. I sent the Blizzard report,
restarted the launcher and the second time it did go through. I do still
have to use wow.exe to play the game, not the launcher. You may just
have to keep restarting and let the launcher grab more of the patch each
time until you get it all. Sorry I didn't see a fix.

I kicked off the background downloader and that worked fine. It also showed me that I already had most of the patch downloaded, so I guess it's been doing it for the last few weeks.

Also, on my Windows box, even after Launcher had finished, background downloader reported that the patch still wasn't fully downloaded.

So I don't think that's relevant. Whatever it is that Launcher is trying to do must be unrelated to the patch download.

Hi,

I have exactly the same problem. It seems to me that there is some sort of internet connection issue triggered by the Launcher (which download WoW game updates). Would be nice to have this fixed when the next patch comes out

I've copied some lines of log which seemed relevant (tried to attach log, but couldnt find the button - am I blind?)
The last line of the below is repeated thousands of times, usually (before the mini patch which triggered the problem) this problem does not occur ...

My Wine version is is 1.3.15, running at Ubuntu 11.04 (amd64).

I have the same issue with the launcher runing wine 1.2 and ubunto 11.10

Has anyone found out how to fix it ?

update to a newer wine version, if the launcher still fails use it as
needed to patch then close it down and run the game from wow.exe

actually I need it to download the whole game not just a patch and the posters above say wine 1.3 hasent fixed that issue

Ah, sorry. I saw the post on the email list and didn't have any thread

downloader has worked fine. Can you still get around the launcher by
using the downloader.exe or is it tied to the launcher now?

I've tried using downloader.exe but I have exactlly the same crash, with blizzard bug report has I have with the launcher.exe

Running Wow.exe instead of Launcher.exe has been a sufficient workaround until today, where a new WoW patch was released. Running Launcher.exe is now required to download and install the patch.

Therefore, running WoW under Wine does not work anymore. I'm now updating WoW on my Windows machine (luckily I have installed my WoW on a USB stick, so this workaround is feasible for me, but probably not to most people).

Earlier in this thread I have provided some debugginig output - I need advice on what is needed to advance in tracking down this bug. Any help is appreciated.

Same here, turning off peer to peer in the downloader forcese it to
direct download the patch. That worked for me.

After the patch I still had to use the wow.exe instead of the launcher
to start the game, but it worked.

Disabling peer-to-peer worked for me too, but I was not satisfied with having to race against a crash to uncheck the peer-to-peer option. The downloader stores its settings in the wine registry, and they can be changed before launching it.

Steps to disable peer-to-peer via wine registry:

1) wine regedit
2) Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Blizzard Entertainment\Blizzard Downloader
3) Make a value named "Disable Peer-to-Peer" (without quotes) if such a value doesn't exist
4) Assign "1" to this value

Someone more familiar with the wine registry could write a one-liner to be the copy-paste terminal solution for solving this problem.

I had that option as you said, and it crash too. I have searched the keyword on registry, and it was as should be, disabled, and crash when it is launched. Today there is a 93mb patch, and wow.exe run launcher, so there is no way to update the game in wine. wine 1.1.42 from lamaresh.net repository on Debian Wheezy/Sid 64bits. Here is console output of wine WoW.exe. It show Launcher.exe window, and after a second, the crash debug windows for cancel or send debug to Blizzard. If someone need more debug info, ask it.

That version of Wine is very, very, very old. The latest version is
1.3.34 and was released for testing on Friday.

Turning off peer to peer transfers seemed to fix the issue for me.

I worked a bit more on this with another wine enthusiast. This one-liner should accomplish the same thing as my previous post:

This seems to have fixed the issue with the launcher for me, I could download the whole game, thanks for sharing the <3

However I still cant play because I installed using winetricks wowtrial and it must install the US version or something, because when I try to log in I get a message saying I'm in the wrong region, and I cant use the installer I download from battle.net because wine doesn't let me accept the license agreement. But thats another issue :'(
