Congratulations on getting this going. However, it still needs some tuning.
I am running SimCity 4 Rush Hour (fully updated) in hardware mode on Ubuntu 11.10 with a wide screen setup. The game loads and runs, or rather walks in hardware operations mode. The frame rate is far too slow, and the only thing I see different is the multibuffer warning is missing from the console log.
FYI here is my current log:

err:d3d:wined3d_device_uninit_3d Something is still holding a reference to depth/stencil buffer 0x1d6120.
Also of note is that something has gone strange in the handling of the ALSA sound system, as I didn't know there were 10,000 channels. This is not a problem because I have no sound at all any more. I don't care.
I suspect running this in DVI isn't helping, but it does run without any real problem except the lousy frame rate.

And, subsequently
I ran a further check in software rendering mode, and the game runs "normally". There is no difference in the console log.
So, all in all, things are better and the game runs very will using internal rather than GPU generated rendering. The interesting thing is that this version of the ATI/AMD fglrx driver actually can handle this game in 1920x1080x32 DVI mode.
When hardware rendering is on, however, the frame rate goes to something around 1 per second or longer.
