new user help. cannot update to newest version
Hello all. First, allow me to say I am a first time user to this software and so far, its been awesome. But allow me to describe my predicament. i first downloaded the 1.1.44 version from http://winebottler.kronenberg.org/. that might have been my first mistake from what I have been reading. it downloaded fine but will not allow me to update under the preferences tab. is there another way that i can update or download the newest data? i will be using this mainly for games. silent hunter. if anyone can help me out that would be great.
WineBottler is very old and not kept up with anymore.. its basically useless. Its also 3rd party software and not supported here.
Normal Wine usage here for the Mac is basically all command line... you compile it all yourself and use Terminal to do everything. You can also (still through Terminal) use software like Macports of Fink to make this a bit easier... but its still a pain.
There are other 3rd party software that can be used, but not supported here. I'd recommend using Crossover or Wineskin for Macs if your looking for 3rd party software to make things easier.

damn
thanks for the info. i assumed it was too good to be true for the easyness of the install. is there a tutorial of sorts of to use terminal correctly to install wine? as you can easily tell, i'm not too good at the very difficult aspects of the computer, hence why i have a mac.
I find it quite interesting that the majority of users use wine on Linux and Mac while Linux and Mac differ so much in User Interface, Custom hobbies, ways to solve problems and basic philosophy…… But it won't matter much though.
Since I'm using Linux, I can't offer any direct help. But I once compiled wine under Linux. Now I assume that there may be some similar mechanism of compiling sources as Linux and Mac have the same origin. You may have to retrieve the source here: http://www.winehq.org/announce/1.3.32 and compile it (you may search for some instructions of compiling sources under Mac. And I do wonder how to generate binaries under Mac, GCC?).
As it's the first time you have used wine, you can try the trial version of Crossover and take a look.

i have tried crossover. while i think the program is good, it does not provide for the programs i need on Mac OSX. wine will work fine, but it's just a very steep learning curve considering i rarely ever delve into command code via terminal and other things like that. i have always wanted to know things of that nature, but it's always so much to learn so fast, because if you dont keep up, you'll be lost. youtube is a great help for learning the basics.

And there was an effort to create a 'launcher' for the Mac under the
