How to get my applications visible under Programs?
How to get my applications visible under Programs?
Hello!
I use Mandriva 2010 with wine 1.2.
I got some apps installed under wine and from my start menu I find:
Wine - > Programs -> "SOME_OF_MY_APPS"
...but not all.
For eg to day I instelled Internet Explorer 7 and I can not access from the start menu.
It seems to get instelled side by side with other apps under "Program Files"
Is there a way to fix this?
Best regards
Fredrik

How did you install it? In either case, see content of these directories:fredand44 wrote:For eg to day I instelled Internet Explorer 7 and I can not access from the start menu.
Code: Select all
$HOME/.config/menus/applications-merged/wine*
$HOME/.local/share/applications/wine
$HOME/.local/share/desktop-directories/wine*

I installed ( I think? ) Internet Explorer 7 via WINE from the MS web site. All seemed to go normally and appeared to successfully install.fredand44 wrote:Hello!

Problem is I don't know WHERE it installed the program or how to launch it?
I really need a desktop and/or menu icon to Launce this.
As much as I hate IE it is a necessity to access a specific site or I would not bother.
( Newbie here. Mandriva 2011 )

I was successful and it seems IE8 Installed okay. However I still cannot find any clue how to actually launch IE? No icons, no idea how to add one to menu etc.
Also browsing files in file browser I cannot see any of the files? Don't know where they are.

Use your menu editor. If you don't know how to use it, ask your distro. No icons, no idea how to add one to menu etc.
Set your file manager to show hidden files. The default wineprefix is ~/.wine.Also browsing files in file browser I cannot see any of the files? Don't know where they are.

Quick tip: in by far most file managers you can press Ctrl+H to display hidden files.dimesio wrote: Set your file manager to show hidden files. The default wineprefix is ~/.wine.

Hound /.wine
Ok the hidden folders allowed me to find and click the exe.
IE started once. When I opened a tab it quit with an unspecified error.
It will not start any more. I created a SymLink on desktop but all that happens is that a blank Wine desktop window opens for a few seconds then closes.
I find in /.wine/windows two IE folders. ie7 and ie8 both contain executables. In the /Program Files folder there is just one, internet explorer folder.

second is Wine's Internet Explorer.
Please consult the Applications Database as there is valuable
information on using IE with Wine in the entries there.
Also, the last that I was informed is that IE8 will install in Wine
and its functionality is available there, but the actual program would
not run properly. Again, I defer to the AppDb for the latest
information.

The first two are the the 'real' Internet Explorer products and theIt will not start any more. I created a SymLink on desktop but all that happens is that a blank Wine desktop

I did use winetricks as that was the only way I could get it to install.

Earlie I thought I installed ie7 because all indications was that it did install. Files are there however there is nothing in /Program Files folder.
The did the winetricks to install ie8 which worked (sort of?) because when I clicked the .exe it launced once then crashed with no specific error.
Now if I try to launch either 7 or 8 the blank wine desktop opens briefly and closes. Nothing happens and no ie.
( BTW how do I determine the WINE version I have. Just installed the other day so assumed it was current and no updates show available in the updater )
Delete or rename ~/.wine and reinstall IE7 using winetricks. IE8 will install but doesn't work. IE7 might be usable enough to meet your needs, but don't count on it working well as a browser. Using real IE is neither recommended nor supported; the main reason to install it is for native dlls that some apps need.paulckruger wrote: Now if I try to launch either 7 or 8 the blank wine desktop opens briefly and closes. [SOLVED] Installe IE
My problem is resolved on two accounts.
I did a delete program for IE8, Downloaded the installer for IE7 from Microsoft and WINE installed it. IE7 is working okay.
That said, the site IE was needed for appears to choke when trying to use IE from Linux/Wine and keeps redirecting me effectively locking me out of the MLS.
After a long try with their tech support they told me they had a new cross-browser Flash based access which worked great in Firefox. It is just now ready to roll out but had not been publicized to MLS users yet.
Since they are now cross-platform ( including smart phones ) the problem is solved and I no longer need IE at all. But I have it anyway.
Thanks much. Had I known about the new MLS site this would never have been a problem. *sigh*
