What does that error say? What Wine version?

All the messages in the terminal looks harmless - most failures came form winemenubuilder - thing that creates desktop/menu entries. It is not critical to an installation.

I probe with setup.exe and this get the same error. The setups runs, but when finalized splash an "Installation failed" error. Caused by

I also cannot install Tell Me More.
The installation window opens but is blank, apart from the buttons >>Next<< and >>Cancel<<. When pressed, >>Next<< button does nothing. While >>Cancel<< does cancel the installation process.
If I wait, nothing happens, the blank window stays forever.

I have the software installed in Windows partition. So, as I cannot install it via Wine in Xubuntu, I also tried to run it from Windows partition via Wine, to no avail. I thought it might be because of the need for the CD: once installed, Tell Me More always need the CD to be run.

I had installed IE 7 and Adobe Flash beforehand, as both are needed by Tell Me More, but it also needs Windows Framework.NET to run Tell Me More, which could be the problem. But what to do about that?

Your Wine version is old and no longer supported. Upgrade to the latest development release. If that doesn't fix it, post terminal output.

What do you mean by "old" wine version? How old? I have just installed it. How could it already be old? And wouldn't it update with the lot, via apt-update? What is the current version?

What you should have done is started a new thread for your current problem. You are unlikely to get a response from people who haven't posted in over 5 years. But since you've already resurrected this ancient thread, let's stay here.

1.4 is almost two years old. The current stable release is 1.6.2, the current development release is 1.7.10. You can try 1.6.2 if you like, but if it doesn't work I'm going to ask you to test 1.7.10 anyway. The point is to avoid wasting both our time on a problem that may have already been fixed by the developers.
