Can't get Steam to install

Post by tminter »

Hello,

I have just installed Wine on Ubuntu 7.10 (x86). I have also managed to get hold of and install gecko. However, when I try to install Steam with

Code: Select all

"wine start SteamInstall.msi"
it comes up with several errors in terminal then a popup box saying "Installation ended prematurely because of an error".

Can anyone help me please?

Notes - I am in the correct directory the one with SteamInstall.msi in it) when i try installing it.

The following is the messages in the terminal from when I type wine start steaminstall.msi
wine start SteamInstall.msi

not accessible.
This one is quite strange... Did you change anything to the rights you have on this directory ?
Try using a new ~/.wine directory if you can. This will blow up every apps you installed before, so this might not be an option.

Please, do not tell me that your wine's C: drive is linked to a real windows one.

I haven't done anything with the rights to the folders.

How would I go about using a new .wine dir? Just re-install Wine?

*this is the first thing I have tried to get working with wine so won't loose anything

EDIT: I have just re-installed wine. Then upon getting the Gecko thing, it all installs ok but then when the regedit commands start is has the same problem of directories not being accessible

No, just delete the .wine folder in your home directory.
(You might need to do something like "View / Show Hidden Files"
in Nautilus, or ls -a, to see it.)

If this really is the first thing you've tried to get running in
Wine, that won't help. Still, it's worth trying.

You might also try
wine msiexec /i steamInstall.msi

How did you install Wine? How (and why?) did you install Gecko?

I installed wine through the Synaptic package manager in Ubuntu 7.10 (x86).

I installed Gecko because it is suppose to be needed to install steam as stated http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... 1554"]here

I installed gecko as stated here http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t ... ight=gecko

Update: I deleted the .wine folder then install gecko and then steam with no problems.

Thanks for the quick help guys

I would like to know why you dug a more than a year-old thread. Anyway, I'll answer, for the sake of patience.

I can't seem to see what is it that you see that is the same on both cases. I DO see that you have probably been fiddling around with wine because you have a fusion.dll from .NET trying to be called! That is your first problem from my POV.
The second problem is that you do not have the MSVCR80 dll, which comes with vcrun2005sp1 libraries.

To get that DLL you can use winetricks and do:
sh winetricks vcrun2005sp1

Be sure to check the steam page on the appdb:

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=1554

However, I highly recommend you undo whatever you did to your wine.

Cheers,

Hi Jorl

Thanks for the tips. I will try to undo what I have done to wine (trying to get OpenBVE train sim to work, I think!).

I've just discovered that despite the error and 'premature' exit of the installer, the app still seems to work. Haven't managed to download a game with it yet, but a battle for a different day, I think!

And you're right, I've put this question on the wrong thread. Sorry.

No problem, I'm always glad to help. Even when I sound rude I'm glad to help :D.

Now, please try not to wake up 1 year old threads again ;)

Then make a separate WINEPREFIX for Steam only (highly recommended).
