Error 429

Hi, I'm new to Wine and to Linux / Ubuntu in general. I'm trying to use Ubuntu as much as possible, so I wanted to use wine to run a gradebook program - Thinkwave Educator. However, I keep getting the following error message:

Runtime Error 429
ActiveX Component Can't Create Object

What can I do? Is there any way that I can get this program running?

you'll probably have to install some additional stuff. Could you post the entire console output while running the app?

Sure, but you'll have to explain to me how. I've been using Ubuntu for literally only a few days, and all of this is like a new language for me.

1. Open a terminal/console. I don't use Ubuntu, so I can't tell you exactly where it is on the menu, but it's there somewhere.
2. In the terminal, cd to the directory where your program's executable is located.
3. Run the program with the command

wine program.exe

substituting the actual name of the executable for "program.exe".
4. Copy whatever messages appear in the terminal and post them here.

You're running it in the wrong directory apparently. First cd to the directory where "thinkwave.exe" is located and try again

I downloaded the app from their website. It needs MDAC 2.8 to be installed for it to run it seems. I dunno if I have the same version you do, I just downloaded the free version from their site. I did get the same errors when trying to launch it though.

Open a terminal and do the following commands...

$ wget www.kegel.com/wine/winetricks
$ ./winetricks mdac28

It seems like you probably need to set a DSN for the software though, since it probably connects using ODBC.

I ran the same commands that you posted, and they seemed to work out. But when I tried to run the program I got this:
Run-Time error '429':

Are you using the basic version listed on the main page of http://www.thinkwave.com/ ?

You may have to reinstall the application, making sure to install MDAC 2.8 first. To do this you can just create a new wine directory. So, open a terminal and try

$ mv .wine .wine_old
$ ./winetricks mdac28

Then install the application again as normal and see if it works any better.

A DSN is a connection to a database. I'm guessing this application needs to connect to the database for the grades? Unless it's all being done locally? More information would be needed on how you use the application, since I've never used it apart from installing it as a test once

The grades are kept locally on my computer, although they can also be posted online. And, yes, I'm using the basic (free) version of Thinkwave.

Hopefully re-installing it will work

Well, installing MDAC 2.8 does get it one step further, but it then complains again about not being able to open a file when you launch the application. You can then get past that by doing ...

$ ./winetricks jet40

Now it fails with a runtime error everytime for me. Not too sure what might help now, other then filing a bug report. Unless someone else has some ideas?

Yeah, I get the same thing. If there's no where else to go, how do I file a bug report? And what would the time line look like for finding a solution? Is there any hope that a solution will be found in about a month?
