Fallout 3 sound issue. (not the one on the DB)

i have an issue with fallout 3. On pinguyos 11.04 (essentially ubuntu 11.04), i get the menu music, and the music in the opening cutscene, but in the opening scene, where the baby is being born, there is no sound at all. no effects, nothing.
If i change the audio options to emulation instead of hardware, then i get sound, buts it really distorted, and scratchy.

is this a common problem?

PinguyOS 11.04 (Ubuntu)
AMD RadeonHD 6990
8GB Ram
Gigabyte ga78lmt-s2p motherboard (ati hd sb sound)
phenom 2 x6 1100t cpu

i havent figured out how to load up my saved games from windows yet, so no idea if sound works beyond the opening scene.

ignore this message. i decided to just play and put up with the scratchy sound and it fixed itself up in the next scene.
