Oblivion -5006

Post by mich04 »

Hi I am having trouble with the setup of Oblivion
1. I copied my cd into an ISO file
2. I than transferred it to my computer
3. I used the command "mkdir /mnt/oblivion"
4. I used the command "mount -o loop -t iso9660 The.Elder.Scrolls.IV.Oblivion.ISO /mnt/oblivion"
(it did tell me that the information was read-only)
5. I used "cd /mnt/oblivion"
6. "ls" it listed all the files and the setup file
7. I than used "wine setup.exe"
8. installer comes up and this is the terminal output
duleInit SEMI-STUB (0x40f900 0x40f010 0x400000)

Code: Select all

Just another friendly reminder that the loopback method of mounting an iso does not emulate hardware. Use CDemu instead if hardware emulation is required.
I am having issues with running Oblivion in WINE as well. No audio once you get to the animation over the map. The first parts have audio. The first thing that happens after launching the launcher is the screen freezes with some nutty tiled repetition of a section of the screen after being stretched and darker horizontal bars added, with the in-betweens lighter. I can't see the "Bethseda" ad, but I can hear it. After all that I get to the normal screen where you can click "continue", with the map background (and I do see the proceeding animation over the map), except there is no audio and the Gnome panel is still showing (since seeing the map).
I'd provide more details, but I'm moving into college now, and don't have time for it. (and my main computer and stuff is in a box).
I hope this thread results in Oblivion working well in WINE.
Cheers,
Jake

Hi,

I'm running into exactly the same problem, although I mounted the real disks. I bought the Game of the Year Edition.

Used a 32-Bit prefix to get in working.

As opposed to a 64-bit prefix? What were you using before that didn't work? Or are you saying that giving Oblivion its own dedicated prefix fixed it?

Just a note, WINE 1.3.28 ran Oblivion perfectly once I switched the audio from "full" to "emulation"... for a while. Then whenever a certain Daedroth saw me in a certain ruin, the game crashed.

However, this is quite the improvement. Before there was no sound (for me) in the game, and there were funny graphics things going on pre-game.

Unfortunately though, it went back to no sound. Switching between "full" and "emulated" won't fix it.

Maybe this will help the OP in the long run.
The reason why the pre-game videos were glitching for me is because Compiz was my window manager. Using the Compiz Fusion Icon found in Control Center, which then appears on the right side of your panel after clicking in in Control Center, I switched my window manager to Metacity. WINE and Oblivion were much happier then. To prove that that is what did it (I thought it was because of the WINE upgrade at first), I switched the window manager back to Compiz, and the video problems returned.

This is with an ATI graphics card. Perhaps with an nVIDIA graphics card, Compiz isn't a problem for WINE.

The lack of audio is still a mystery to me though. It had audio once. The "killall pulseaudio, sudo killall pulseaudio" doesn't touch it.

Did you add the flag in your .pulse directory to turn off autostart pulse?

If you want to keep pulse you can try my post here (if using a
debian/ubuntu type OS):

http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=13182&start=64

Follow up to:

Open winecfg go to audio tab and make sure Alsa is checked and
Emulation is selected.

and see if that fixes the sound for you (don't do the compile pulse
etc.). Some have said that allows sound in games with wine. YMMV. I
have to do the compile pulse thing to have pulse and sound in wine.
