Trying to run DDO on Ubuntu 10.10

Post by Remy540 »

Hello all. I have been searching forums, reading how-tos, and googling constantly for the last week but have yet to find a solution to, or even the cause of my problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Ok the problem,
Everything installs and runs great. But after about 2-5 minutes of gameplay the screen freezes and goes B&W. Sound continues like the game is still running. Once it froze and stayed in color. I've made about 10+ attempts with diff settings so far. I can stay at the character selection screen as long as I like no problem. I have been using medium graphics settings. Game starts with very high settings by default.

Current software,
-Ubuntu 10.10 AMD64
-ATI/AMD proprietarty FGLRX graphics driver (installed thru the ubuntu additional drivers tool)
-DDO update 8 standard res downloaded on 12/15/10 (Used a seperate windows pc to download and copied install folder over to this pc)
-Wine 1.3 (installed thru Ubuntu Software Center)
-PyLotRO (also installed thru Ubuntu Software Center)

Current hardware
-CPU AMD Athlon 2.8Ghz Dual Core
-RAM 2GB
-Motherboard ASUS M4A78-EM
-Graphics card ATI Radeon HD 3850 512MB

If anyone needs more info or wants to know what I have tried so far let me know. As far as something like a debug log you will need to tell me how/where to find it.

Adding things I forgot in OP.

Full version of wine is - 1.3.9-0ubuntu1~maverickppa1 (wine1.3)
according to ubuntu software center

Used this with winetricks - $ bash ./winetricks vcrun200{3,5,8} d3dx9

I followed the Howto in Wine AppDB for Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited as closely as possible.

Also I have tried to get a terminal output but I must be entering the command wrong. Or maybe it has to do with having to use PyLotRO to launch the game I'm unsure at this point.

crashing issue with DDO

Post by ky1t »

I have similar issues. The game works fine , but every so often I crash to the desktop, or sometimes crash with no other option but to reboot. I have captured some output from PyLotro which I will post. I will also post my specs. I just wanted to get this first post out there so I can have something to refer to once I get on the machine with the problems. (I am am my Ubuntu Netbook right now).

Thanks,
Michael

Seeing the same thing here, similar specs. I took a wander through the forums and it seems that this is not a Wine only thing, there's at least a couple windows users running into the same exact problem. Dunno if this changes anything or helps at all, but it's at least a known problem

Something I always recommend, when I hear about screens turning grey for any app, is disable Ubuntu's Visual Effects. Especially if you have an older system. Those effects have caused me numerous headaches in the past, including with ddo.

And if you are experiencing frequent crashes, especially ones that occur during area transitions, check to see what version of wine you are using. Likely it's 1.2 or 1.3. If your other winblows dependent apps don't require 1.2 or 1.3, I recommend a downgrade. Seems to me that ddo runs a lot better on 1.1. From what I've seen, cdega has had this similar issue with it's later versions. With 1.2 and 1.3 I also ran in to extreme lag with when DDO's video settings were on max, but had near prefect performance with 1.1.

Hope those recommendations help some of you out.

Hello, I also installed DDO and pylotro like the posters above. After a few minutes the game stops. It looks like a crash to desktop, but the sound keeps playing. It looks like it is a display bug.

This is the error line in pylotro:

Code: Select all

err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x68c19a40 "x11drv_main.c: X11DRV_CritSection" wait timed out in thread 001e, blocked by 0009, retrying (60 sec)
This is not the first time I have problems playing a game with my computer, and I think this is because of the catalyst drivers.

My software:
Ubuntu 11.04
Kernel 2.6.38-10-generic
GNOME 2.32.1
Wine 1.2.2

AMD: Radeon HD 4830 (RV770 LE)

Catalyst version 11.6
Driver packaging version 8.861-110524a-120881C-ATI
2D Driver version 8.86.5
Catalyst control center 2.13
RandR version 1.3
OpenGL version string: 3.3.10834 Compatibility Profile Context
