Since update of January 15th Left 4 Dead 2 (steam) crashes

Post by drbergie »

Hi all.
I was using wine 1.3.10 to run Steam and Left 4 Dead2 successfully until recently. Last week, there was an update for Steam, and now I can't start Left 4 Dead 2. It starts up, but then immediately crashes. The window "Preparing to launch Left 4 Dead 2" pops up, and then disappears. It worked flawlessly last Sunday, and yesterday it stopped working.

I am getting the same console output as Nick. See latest (Jan 15th) comment here.

My output for starting Steam, and then try and start Left 4 Dead 2:

I tried Wine versions 1.3.7 and 1.3.11, all with no luck.

Any help would be appreciated.

Just tried it with git checkout (wine --version reports: wine-1.3.11-211-gbaeb0d9)with same results.

Reinstall your video drivers. Make sure that in-game community is disabled as well as GameOverlayRenderer.dll (via winecfg libraries tab).

Rinstalled nvidia drivers I am now on version 260.19.29.
In game community is disabled for Left 4 Dead 2 (and all my other Steam games)

Added disable Library override for that DLL, and that seemed to solved the startup problem. :D

(For someone that doesn't know how to do that: run winecfg. Goto Libraries tab, paste "GameOverlayRenderer.dll" into the New override for Library combobox, and click add. Then select the newly created override item, click edit, and set the "Disable" checkbox")

Does Steam ignore the "disable in game community" check box these days?

Thanks for the help vitamin, now I can return to killing zombies!

Seems to be the case. As well as broken Wine due to some changes in gcc seems like distro specific, as source games work just fine here.
