Help with a steam game on ubuntu

Post by jshrable »

Yesterday my computers hard drive was supposedly destroyed because of windows as dell tech help told me over the phone. My friend came over today and introduced me to ubuntu and wine. My computer is working wonderfully on this os but I have a problem. I bought elder scrolls III on steam yesterday 20 minutes before my computer crashed. I don't really know the first thing about computers. I have steam installed but when i try to open elder scrolls steam brings up a menu that says launching game then that text goes away and nothing happens. Please help thank you

This has been discussed, very recently, on the forum.

One thing I really hate discussing is PLEASE READ THE NEW USERS STICKY
BEFORE POSTING TO THE FORUM. It provides great hints and ideas before
posting.

Please read the Applications Database entry on this game and see if any
information provided there will be of assistance:

I have tried all day searching for what you saw but I can't find anything that helps. I have seen many posts containing the same problem I have but all that I have found say that the problem has already been answered. I am using playonlinux and I am currently using wine version 1.3.24. I am using ubuntu. I have no idea how to execute a game through steam using the terminal either. If you can help I would love it if you post if not I can just live without it for now.

I think James might have been referring to this post: http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=12757
I am using playonlinux
PlayOnLinux is not supported here. This forum is for plain Wine only.

Thank you Dimensio.
I am using playonlinux and I am currently using wine version 1.3.24.
For assistance with POL, you must go through the POL package
maintainer. They provide support and they are the people who file bug
reports on their product. This is an agreement reached between the Wine
and POL/POM projects. They add patches and make other changes that they
support.

For executing games through the terminal for Steam, Google is your
friend as this topic was discussed several times here in the Wine User
Forum and elsewhere.
