Can WINE help me using Dell Axim from Puppy Linux 511?

Post by Benny7440 »

Since I'm new to this forum I probably I'm doing something wrong, I'm sorry if this's the case!
I don't have a windows base system, solely Puppy Linux. I do have an Axim, though; can't do hardly anything useful with it since starting using just Linux. Went through many pages about WINE but failed to locate any useful info. That's the reason for posting my issue here.
I've the original cd that came with the Pocket PC &, for the moment, I've connected a Vista hdd to this VAIO. The original hdd is missing (think it was running XP Pro but not sure). BTW, the Vista version in the hdd is something like MME.
Does somebody around has managed to use a Pocket PC from/within linux via WINE or otherwise?
Thanks! :?:

Depends on what you want to do, but in general, it's probably
better to use a native Linux app if possible.

I've never tried, but for Ubuntu, there are tips at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Porta ... dowsMobile

Perhaps Puppy has a similar page, or maybe the apps described
at the above page are also available on Puppy.

Thanks! [Question]
What are you wanting to do with the Axim? You can sync to it with Pilot,
a native Linux application. I've used that to move files and programs
onto an iPAQ 3630 and, IIRC, to install CAB files.

I have apps that run on the 3630 and on a Binatone B.350 (WM6) which
have PC EXEs that run under Wine without problems, but of course the
iPAQ and WM6 EXEs won't run under Wine because Wine doesn't attempt to
emulate the service calls used by any mobile Windows version.

Thanks for responding, Martin Gregorie & Dan Kegel! Went to that Ubuntu link & decided to run <dmesg> from a console & this came up:

usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial
USB Serial support registered for generic
usbcore: registered new interface driver usbserial_generic
usbserial: USB Serial Driver core
USB Serial support registered for PocketPC PDA
ipaq 2-2:1.0: PocketPC PDA converter detected
usb 2-2: PocketPC PDA converter now attached to ttyUSB0
usbcore: registered new interface driver ipaq
ipaq: v0.5:USB PocketPC PDA driver
usb 2-2: USB disconnect, address 2
ipaq ttyUSB0: PocketPC PDA converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0
ipaq 2-2:1.0: device disconnected
usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 3
ipaq 2-1:1.0: PocketPC PDA converter detected
usb 2-1: PocketPC PDA converter now attached to ttyUSB0
usb 2-1: USB disconnect, address 3
ipaq ttyUSB0: PocketPC PDA converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0
ipaq 2-1:1.0: device disconnected
usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 4
ipaq 2-1:1.0: PocketPC PDA converter detected
usb 2-1: PocketPC PDA converter now attached to ttyUSB0
usb 2-1: USB disconnect, address 4
ipaq ttyUSB0: PocketPC PDA converter now disconnected from ttyUSB0
ipaq 2-1:1.0: device disconnected
usb 2-1: new full speed USB device using uhci_hcd and address 5
ipaq 2-1:1.0: PocketPC PDA converter detected
usb 2-1: PocketPC PDA converter now attached to ttyUSB0

So, it recognized, somehow, the device. Now, that api that you say (Pilot) is something new for me. Will find some info on that after some 'wine' has evaporated from my head.
Thanks to both of you for your kind help!

BTW, what I'm trying to do (at first at least) is to move some files there & use it as a common reader for certain docs.

Oops - I think I had a brain fart - rather than Pilot, which provides
file transfers for Palm Pilots, you want SynCE, which does the business
for Windows CE/ Windows Mobile devices.

I've used both, but some time ago - hence a degree of confusion - and
haven't done anything with my iPAQ for quite some time. These days I use
a Binatone PNA and shift files using an SD card.

Thanks for responding, Martin Gregorie!
I'm going to give SynCE a try later during the week. Can't do it right away due to some other more pressing issues.
