Steam in wine

Post by BoredOfTheWeb »

I am running Kubuntu 10.04 and running wine 1.2.2. I got Steam today, and it loads fine. But when I click on any page other than the one it opens with (right now it's about Black Ops), the whole thing crashes. I can open it again, and the same thing happens. I can even install games from my library, but I can't go to the store or anything. I don't get an error message either. Any ideas?

I didn't use Steam for a while now, but you should try to update wine to the latest release.

Since I just downloaded wine, I'm pretty sure it is the latest release. It's at least the one that comes from my KPackageKit, and when I go to update, everything comes up as updated. Is there anything else that I can to to make sure it's updated?

Use the Wine-devel ppa.

OK, I think that I just updated to the most current version of Wine. I typed "sudo apt-get install wine1.3" into the terminal and it seemed to update. Since then, my games have been running a bit less buggy, but Steam still crashes anytime I click away from the main Steam page. I don't have to use Steam, but as I understand it, the only way to access the console for games like Half-Life 1 is to go through Steam. Any other ideas on making Steam work, or any ideas for getting around having to use it? Thanks for the help so far! Also, sorry if I sound like an idiot. I'm new to Linux and very new to Wine, so forgive me if I don't know what I'm doing. I'm learning! Thanks again!

Install corefonts packages with winetricks, see bug #22751.
