Office XP - possible to install?

Post by Daniel Kasak »

Hi all.

I've *never* been able to install Office XP. I've had it running in
CrossOver ( demo ), but my work is too stingy to pay for that, and yet I
still want to install Office. At the moment my VirtualBox installation
is becoming flaky.

I've updated a fresh Ubuntu-8.04 installation to wine-1.0-rc1.

I've then followed the instructions for installing on Gentoo ( install
IE6 via ies4linux, etc, etc ), part-way down the page at:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=3514

When I follow these, I get told that I need to perform some 'system
updates' ( or something like that ). I install the updates, go to
install Office, and get told that the system updates weren't applied
properly. I get 2 options: repair or exit. Repair goes through the same
process without repairing properly, and leads me back to the same point
again ( requiring a 'repair' of system components ). Exit exits.

I did the above a couple of times ( deleting .wine and .ies4linux each
time ). I then tried without any of the 'tricks' and installed into a
fresh setup. This way, I could select what features to install, but just
before the installer started copying files, it crashed out
( http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5163 ).

Then don't bother asking here. If you using ies4linux - your Wine configuration can not be supported. Refer to makers of that .... thing if you have any problems.

BTW RC1 version is horribly broken - you'd be lucky getting anything to install/work with it.

If you really need this for your commercial use - just buy Crossover Office.

Yes. Good day to you too.

Hmmm. Well, the advise with respect to getting apps going seems to be to
follow instructions in the AppDB. In fact, I'd even suggest that this is
the whole purpose of the AppDB. I followed those instructions. Maybe
these particular instructions shouldn't be there? The thing is that they
are the most complete and promising instructions around. There is a
DISTINCT lack of other instructions.

But anyway, as I noted, after attempting via this method a couple of
times, I wiped .wine and started with a 'naked' config ... which got me
precisely nowhere. If my use of ies4linux offends you so much, please
forget that I used it, and only pay attention to the part where I
started with a clean profile and ran setup.exe
BTW RC1 version is horribly broken - you'd be lucky getting anything to install/work with it.
Hmmm. Good RC then. I can't win, right? Let me put the fire under you
once more by pointing out that IE6 'just worked' :)

Hi Daniel,

I'm also a user of Wine. I used Crossover Linux 6.2 to install MS Office 2003 and it worked perfectly, but in the past the install did not work in Wine.

However since Wine 0.9.58 I have been able to install Office 2003 in plain Wine. I haven't tried it yet in 1.0-rc1 but I believe it will work too.

If you have problems, please post the exact error messages and maybe I or someone else can help you get it sorted.

I think 1.0-rc1 is a great release. My main use for Wine is my collection of astronomy programs, and many of the problems I used to have went away with version 1.0-rc1. I'm looking forward to 1.0.

Office 2003 installation is broken in 0.9.61 and 1.0-rc1.
