Office 2003 Install Fails - Ubuntu 8.04 - Wine 0.9.61

Post by akincer »

Something happened between wine 0.9.59 to 0.9.61 where the wheels have really come off. First, the installed Office 2003/Outlook never worked, but I tried to run it after installing .61 and got the old failed to "reserve range 00000000-00010000" error message.

I performed this command the following command to try to fix it:

sudo sysctl -w vm.mmap_min_addr=0

This allowed Outlook to run long enough to fail with the familiar "Cannot start Microsoft Outlook" message.

So I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Wine to see if things worked better from scratch. Now, the Office 2003 install fails altogether after accepting the license agreement with:

Code: Select all

wine: Unhandled page fault on read access to 0x003f0054 at address 0x7bc42f28 (thread 005e), starting debugger...
err:seh:raise_exception Unhandled exception code c0000005 flags 0 addr 0x7bc43734
Is .61 totally broken?

Did you try deleting the ~/.wine folder and reinstalling Office with a
clean environment.

You are using linux not windows...
I'll stop trying this when I stop getting fixme, stub and other messages on install. I find it completely absurd to suggest that the installation process might not be improved.

If you are talking about uninstalling and reinstalling Wine, I do that just in case the upgrade scripts miss something. I take very little for granted when it comes to testing.

Yes. But then again, I thought this was Linux and not Windows :)

These fixme, stub messages are wine warning you that whatever program
you are running is using a part of the windows api that has not been
fully implemented by wine. Reinstalling wine itself will not help this
at all. If a specific fixme (or stub) is preventing your application
from running you can file bug reports to bring this to the attention
of the developers so that they can know that it is important to finish
that particular api.

Yes. But then again, I thought this was Linux and not Windows :)
Deleting the ~/.wine will get rid of any bad setup (unnecessary usage
of native dlls) that the user has done.

There was already a bug report as well as a regression test about this and patches to fix the bug.

As far as installer goes - it's a known problem: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12928

Don't do this. cd to the directory first.

I just tested the installer in RC1 on OpenSUSE 10.3 with a clean wineprefix, and it failed with the message "Installation ended prematurely because of an error."

I added the information and a regression test to bug 12928, which has been closed because it was supposedly fixed, because I think it's the same bug. The regression test I ran points to the same patch that was identified as the problem the first time around. But someone needs to officially reopen that bug. Or, I can open a new bug for it--let me know if I should.

Please open a new bug then. There could have been few problems introduced with the patch. One problem was fixed. At least one more remains it seems.

Of course please make sure you started from the clean ~/.wine prefix and correctly started the installation. Just something that will show there are some problems remain.
