GTA:SA+ WIne-RC1 + Ubuntu 8.04[64bit] -> Unhdl. exce.

Post by Limpador »

Morning Wine-Boardies,

I followed this guide: http://wiki.winehq.org/WineOn64bit to install wine.
I then installed DX9.0c.
I later installed GTA: SA (referred as platinum: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=2599

I got the usual error: preloader: Warning: failed to reserve range 00000000-00010000
This one I could fix myself after some googling.

Well now there appeared another error:

Code: Select all

Apologies if this looks like garbage I'm doing my first reply to the list
via this interface.

I don't believe installing directx is the right thing to do, especially if
it's a platinum rated game. Admittedly I haven't done any reading on this
game, yet. I think that installing directx in wine in almost any circumstance is a bad idea, from what I've read.

Code:
$ wine *.exe
That seems like an error, you should be using the game executable, not that
wildcard I'm pretty sure.

Seems like it should run with that rating, try starting over without
installing directx in wine if you are strapped for a starting point. (rm
-rf ~/.wine will turf your existing configuration, you may want to mv it or
otherwise create a backup while you are experimenting).

Thanks for your reply, gnivler.

I tried the things you mentioned, but the problem is still present.
What I did:

Code: Select all

$rm -rf ~/.wine
$rm -rf /mnt/VP/GTA
$wine /cdrom0/Install.exe
Until this point I did not remark any errors.

Code: Select all

$wine gta_sa.exe
gave again:

Code: Select all

$ wine gta_sa.exe

You're welcome but I'm a newbie :)
I tried the things you mentioned, but the problem is still present.
What I did:

Code:
$rm -rf ~/.wine
$rm -rf /mnt/VP/GTA
$wine /cdrom0/Install.exe
$wine gta_sa.exe

Code:
$ wine gta_sa.exe

Hmm, pretty sure this has gone beyond my experience :/ Luckily I know
next to nothing about wine, so somebody probably knows :) I notice
the error seems to still be the same though, which strikes me at
least, as strange since you are running two different exe files, and
in one case it isn't even an exe? or maybe the *.exe globbed onto
something. Sorry I can't be more help, good luck.

Try setting OffscreenRenderingMode to "fbo":

Code: Select all

echo -ne "[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D]\n"OffscreenRenderingMode"="fbo"" | wine regedit -

Hi again,

Thanks for the hint vitamin, but it didn't work :/

Input:

Code: Select all

$ echo -ne "[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D]\n\"OffscreenRenderingMode\"=\"fbo\"" | wine regedit -
$ cd /mnt/V*/GTA/GTA*
$ wine gta_sa.exe

Then you got one of the recent d3d regressions. Good luck. This sort of things tend not to get fixed for months :-\

You could try going back a few wine versions. Try using one that the
AppDB for GTA says works platinum.

Ump, okay - never thought of that.
That's crap.
Well I won't switch back.

Just
$sudo apt-get remove wine
for me this night.

Could you have a look here http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=3780 and try to change your gpu driver. I think you are using an ATI card? I think it's a driver related issue, isn't it?

Please note this bug http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=12979 when you are trying a newer wine version.

What's your real problem? GTA:SA workes great (see http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... n&iId=3780 ) at least on nvidia cards. It seems to be that the ATI drivers are buggy, so please complain to ATI. If you have a question, please feel free to ask.

my real problem is not gta, i don't have this game, it was just a (bad) example

I speak more about PES2008, bioshock, assassin creed or heavy directx hits like this on witch effort has to be make at my sense but i know windows on linux implementation is already a miracle

In fact my main ask is : "why is it so important to concentrate effort on windows office witch has equivalent on linux environment???? "

You would say " who are you to tell that ???"
My answer : just someone who can see that subsited pc hits are not very far from running and running it could change everything in my computer experience ...

I hope you'll understand

I think the MS Office emphasis, such as it is, is because it's
a friggin' popular app. If you look at the surveys, it's consistently
way high up. e.g. http://wiki.winehq.org/LinuxApplicatonRequestSurvey
shows it in the top 5 (maybe even top 1 depending on how you count).

And you can see that Microsoft Office generates more search queries these days
than does Bioshock:

http://www.google.com/trends?q=photosho ... all&sort=0

Sales figures probably bear this out, too.

OpenOffice may be a good substitute, but there is a world of people out there
WHO. WILL. NOT. ACCEPT. ANY. CHANGES.
in their tools. I've run into it many times myself. (And yes, these same
people happily accept Office 2007. Go figure. I think they just feel safe with
Microsoft.) And I personally often find files that OpenOffice doesn't handle
properly. (Yes, I've filed bugs for them, and they're slowly getting fixed.)

So that's the story. It might not be pleasant for you, but I think
that's the way it is.

Thank you for your answer Dan, explicit as always.

Let me continue, just for intellectual fun

Do you know what was the best"cultural"seller , for all category, here in france in 2007 ?

It was PES' dvd in front of Harry Potter's book with million of sales

Imagine the benefit for linux environment if this application was decently emulated (and we are not very far)

Thing we can figure out browsing your application database is that lot of major games are for the bettter at bronze state of emulation, and people are quickly discouraged to get their favorite game emulated so we can read in lot of forums " We can't play recent game on Linux and we never will"

I read a lot of defeatist topic like this on ubuntu or mandriva forum

Maybe it can explain Linux application Request survey...

Rico: I'll have a look at this, when I have more time(tomorrow). For now I got some dudes here, chilling and all that suff :D

At the other topic in this thread: I'm not disgusted by the lack of ported games. I for myself just made an experiment with GTA. If Ricos help will not result in the wished result I simply set up another partition with NTFS. There I can play the more or less hours, when I want to.
No reason to shout at the devs: Hey get it running, it's rated platinum. That's trolling in my point of view.

According to the main page of the AppDB, nine of the top ten platinum apps and nine of the top ten gold apps are games. My first impression of Wine, in fact, was that it was mainly aimed at gamers.

Well some one wants to think that other people using Wine now. Well they don't. If a business related app does not work in Wine, no one wastes time on it. Thy just use windows. As simple as that. Because there are lots of apps they depend upon. Not just office.

The few "special" apps like Photoshop are exceptions. Most users of those apps don't need windows for nothing else. So if their "golden" application works on Linux - that's all they ever need.

And gamers ... well they can accept "half working" game. Slower, with graphical issues, bad sound, etc. Because those are just that ... games. Oh and they all tired of fighting windows to keep their games running. As they have pretty much same issues there as well.

I try to be clear and polite. (The latter part is hard because I'm such
a curmudgeon.)

OK, I'll bite:
http://www.google.com/trends?q=harry+po ... +photoshop
compares how often people search for harry potter game,
and how often they search for Photoshop. Looks like the ratio is
something like 95:1 in favor of Photoshop.
I read a lot of defeatist topic like this on ubuntu or mandriva forum
It's anything but defeatist. We're giving Linux users what they
are, on average, looking for. The distribution is so spiky that
getting top ten requested apps working perfectly, we could multiply
wine's audience by a large factor.

Lest you think this strategy leads to only supporting business
apps, look at
http://www.google.com/trends?q=world+of ... +photoshop

Wine run WoW pretty darn well; it was worth focusing on because
lots of people use it, and the Google Trends data supports that.

So easy on the sour grapes. We may disagree on which data to
pay attention to, I suspect we're in violent agreement on one thing:
we want Wine to run the apps people want to run on Linux, and
we're doing our best to make it happen.

Vitamin : The fact is that keeping another os in dualboot is not very usefull to me

Dan : i guess i'm not the only one to know that millions of geeks don't leave Xp or vista because of exclusivity in recent games, even if they know these OS are poor, mercantile and unsecure...

Anyway i dind'nt wait anything from you and i'll continue to support wine with enthousiasm for a while

The only reason I still have Windows installed is for games, which is
probably not a unique statement. I'm happy with alternative software,
open source, great no problem. I've got a user support background and
can definitely see people who are incapable and/or uninterested in even
small concessions in their tasks/activities... Interesting discussion
in this thread.

Put it into VM for business apps. If you want games - Wine sucks at any game play. Unless you have uber hardware for 10 years old games. And even then you risking hitting new regression every new Wine version.

And if we concider that people who use wine have windows license ( ), why do people interested in photoshop and office don't put it in their vmware folder, i think virtualisation is better designed for this than for directx.

It would liberate power for wine directx's work

About regression , i'm not an expert in pharaonic coding, but i don't understand why wine don't use a plugin architecture, as lot of complexe projects

Each specific part of windows api could be a plugin that you could add to a fully verified and working core, with the ability to update, downgrade, activate, desactivate each plugin with a graphical inrterface

Right, I am using an ATI card. In fact it's the HD2400. Yesterday I cchanged the GPU driver from the binary Version(ATIs crap) to the Radeon HD driver, which is openscoureced Version.
This did not change anything at all.

Patch works fine. Thanks for the hint.
I still can't play GTA because the

Code: Select all

Unhandled exception: page fault on execute access to 0x7c0d1f18 in 32-bit code (0x7c0d1f18).
is not gone for now.

I'll try today if MaxPayne 2 (another Platinum rated Game) works.

in their tools. I've run into it many times myself. (And yes, these same

And I have clients who will not accept that an indent or a page break does not look like the same on the document they get back (when done on open office) as on the document they sent and instead of correcting it themselves, they will rather send you the text 10 times and hold you the whole morning on the phone about the format issue (and I am not talking about the case when the issue is caused due to a different printer's driver).
I have clients that send the text as docx and expect it as docx because that's their right as paying client and OpenOffice can not save it so.

I could return your comment about games vs productive tools:
I never understood why people would use a computer for games. For games a video console is much more appropriate (besides the question Windows vs Linux). Buying a computer solely to play (and when taking account of the hardware requirements) is really a waste of money, not to speak that due to the progress of computers you can't even play old games on new computer or you will crash on the wall before you even start to play (game from '92).
