Wine Mac OSX Questions

Post by Ertai87 »

So I have an Intel Mac and I'd like to run a couple Windows apps on it. I looked in the Mac OSX working programs wiki, but it doesn't have any of the programs I want to use listed. I checked AppDB, but it doesn't have Mac tests for any of them listed either. I was wondering if anyone has had experiences with MS Office 2003 or 2007 or Steam on Mac OSX (Leopard) with Wine. Thanks.

Right, but I have extra copies of Office '03 and '07 for Windows lying around, while Office '08 for Mac is about $100 I'd prefer to not have to pay if possible. At the moment, I use OpenOffice, but Word does a bunch of stuff that OOo doesn't do, at least not to the quality I'd like it done.

Try it and see. If it doesn't work as in windows/linux, file a bug. Be
careful though, as there was a recent regression in installing '03 (in
0.9.61, fixed in rc1 I believe). '07 probably won't work for a while,
but you might try and file any bugs so we know what to fix.

You will have to get a version of Wine specifically created for the Mac,
which I regularly test, called Darwine. Mike Kronenberg publishes them
about one to three days after the published release. The latest that I
know Mike has built is Darwine 0.9.61, which includes the Winehelper
application and a nifty GUI front-end to Dan Kegel's Winetricks (which
you might need for Office 2003.)

Please post any further problems to the list/forum.

OK, I'll try it out.

Also, I'm still a bit new to the Unix installation thing. If it goes awry and I want to remove it, is it as simple as deleting .wine and it'll take all its associated apps with it, or can some apps start writing to other parts of my HD?

OK, first problem: How do I run the application? I copied the Darwine folder to /Applications, but I can't run anything. If I try to run WineHelper, it says it's not supported on my architecture (Intel MacBook, late '07 model). I can't open Wine.bundle or anything inside the Wine Apps folder. What am I missing?

Second problem: The "darwin home page" link in the readme is broken.

Did you get the Intel version? If you went to the Darwine web site
there are two very old versions of Wine compiled for the Mac. One is
for the PowerPC platform and the other is for the Intel platform. If
you downloaded Mike Kronenberg's Darwine, this should work with your
Intel based system without any problems.

I downloaded it from SourceForge, which is linked from the Wiki on this site. Is that the proper version?

I'm having problems too. This is my first time trying to use Darwine. I downloaded the latest version 1.0-rc1 from Kronenberg's site:

http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/

The only instructions are to drag the Darwine folder to the Applications folder. Ok. I did that. I tried to launch Notepad to see what would happen and basically I got a bunch of errors. Then I was writing this message and tried it again, and now the apps will launch, so I guess it figured out what it needed to figure out when I ran it the first time.

however, I'm trying to run The Trix app to download DLL's and stuff and it complains about Applescript something er other when I launch it.

Is there a resolution of this issue yet?

There is another build - http://thisismyinter.net/?p=29
At least version Darwine 0.9.60 contain X11, which is important.

Kronenberg build require to install manually X11, as noted on site.
# Bevore You install, please make sure:

* Tiger users: install X11 from your Tiger Installation DVD

# download and open Darwine 1.0-rc4
# drag Darwine to the "/Applications" Folder
# o delete, just drag the folder "Darwine" to the trash
# to completely remove Darwine (and Windows apps) from your system delete the following files and folders:

* /Applications/Darwine
* ~.wine
* ~/Library/Preferences/org.wine.winehelper.plist

If I'm reading http://thisismyinter.net/?p=29 correctly, there is no
"current" (post 0.9.53) build for Tiger? Is a newer build available
from a different site?
