Sound problems in Steam games

Post by PythonEater »

This topic seems to pop up every now and then, and I think I've tried all the solutions that have been given for it. I'm running Linux Mint 9 (64 bit) with Wine 1.1.42. The problem is that when I start a Steam game, I either get no sound, or I have sound for a few minutes, then it cuts out. The problem happened to me under both Ubuntu 10.04 (64 bit) and Linux Mint 9 (64 bit). I have tried disabling Pulse Audio, and a few other "fixes" that i found, but nothing seems to have worked :( . This is a clean Wine install, and I haven't ran any winetricks. Any suggestions?

See if you have more than one box checked in winecfg for sound. I have the best success when using just ALSA, other times just OSS. Does this happen when you have a browser open? Do you have desktop or pidgin sounds enabled? Both the desktop effects and pidgin sounds can interrupt sound in a game, IIRC.

I only have one box checked for sound in winecfg, but I did have desktop effects enabled. I'll try disabling them and see if that works.

Well, it seemed like it worked for a minute, but then the sound cut out. Although, it seemed like it took longer to be cut out this time :? Anyway, any more suggestions?

I thought I'd share my solution with everyone. I bumped up the default sampling rate in the audio settings from 44100 to 48000 and it fixed it.
