New Steam Client 2010 GUI

Post by cryptodan »

I tried the new Steam GUI in Ubuntu using Wine, and well it fails to start. I am not sure why, but it does.

Try running it in the terminal and tell us what output you get.

As the AppDB demands, just set its version to Windows 7. After that, make sure you make those Valve bastards pay for what they keep doing.

How would I do that?

Fire up Wine Config (Terminal->winecfg). From there, it's pretty straightforward. You can set Windows 7 as the default version for ALL apps, or you could go to "Add an Application" and add Steam.exe to it and only set the exception on it.

Cheers,

Its funny the new GUI looks like crap on Windows, but on Linux via WINE it looks perfect it doesn't give me a headache.

I am running wine 1.1.43 in Debian Squeeze (32 bit) and still receive this error. My console gets flooded with the message "fixme:threadpool:RtlQueueWorkItem Flags 0x4 not supported" after I login to steam and as soon as the main steam menu appears, it crashes. Has anyone else still received problems with the new steam GUI?

Try using the latest release candidate and advise if this fixme still
occurs.

Fixme's are to notify you that some of the Windows API code has not been
implemented. They are not errors and may or may not affect your ability
to run a particular program.

BTW, what is the program you are trying to run and have you visited the
Applications Database to see if there is a fix or even if the program
will install/run in Wine?

The fixme is not related to the crash.

Please update your nvidia graphics drivers as they are causing the crash.

This information is clearly displayed on the Steam Appdb page!

The crash he talked about may also be related to missing fonts.
See bug #22751.

It looks like this bug has reappeared in 1.3.0 as I'm getting exactly the same issue as before.
Here's the output I get

Selecting Windows7 for steam makes no difference, it just requested you install an additional package before failing.
I'm running Gentoo~x86_64 in case it's relevant.
Any ideas? I'm going to downgrade wine to see if the fault vanishes.

Well I tried 1.1.44 and exactly the same error. This happens on both my machines.
Any ideas?

Read through this bug report:

http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=24064

Looks like Steam messed up the ability to run games under Wine.
