Is there current or semi-current ATI video card that people are having good
luck with for video games through WINE? I'm going to need a new card soon and
we have had a long run of bad luck with the quality of Nvidia cards so I would
like to give ATI a try. I know the driver improvements for Linux have been
slow to arrive, but if anyone has a card they can recommend it would give me a
starting place to check them out. The type of games I would be using it for
are things like Blizzard games, Star Wars Galaxies, Eve, Torchlight, Champions
Online, Star Trek Online, etc.
Thank you for any ideas.
successful ATI card for WINE gaming?
This is a tough one.
Despite ATi's drivers having improved over time, nVidia is still superior in this regard. I've been using a HD 5870 with ATi's proprietary drivers and i've encountered multiple issues with 3D applications in WINE.
Native Linux (Installed) games seem to perform very well, but if you intend to use WINE, stick with nVidia.
I'm replacing my ATi 5870 for a nVidia GTX 480 specifically for Linux/WINE.
Look, ATi is not HORRIBLE for Linux/WINE, but there are some refinements and small bugs/issues here and there that will cause unanticipated issues.
If you refer to the application database for WINE, there are alot of games that are considered Platinum/Gold but do not work properly with ATi...but most titles in the App DB have been tested with nV cards. And there's too many forums/posts, even entries in the App DB, that indicate issues related to ATi users that nV users do not experience.
You can go for ATi and, over time, start experiencing more stable/refined drivers, but if you intend on experiencing WINE now, go nV.

I gotta agree with r2rX.
I have an ATI 5870, and went back to using an Nvidia 9800GTX+ because the ATI drivers were so buggy. Buggy not just in Wine, but in native Linux apps like Boxee too (tons of graphics artifacts on startup... hangs in some native Linux games).
Take a look here - https://launchpad.net/bugs/bugtrackers/ati-linux-bugs to see what you might be getting yourself into before you buy.
In the past, I kept re-installing the ATI card and giving it another try every time ATI announced new & improved drivers, only to be disappointed every time. So, a couple of weeks back I finally bought a PNY GTX465 and relegated the 5870 to forever stay in one of the kiddos' Windows machines.
ATI's definitely making improvements, but I still do not consider them to be up to the point where I would not *highly* recommend against buying ATI cards to any friend considering their use with Linux.
If you absolutely can't be dissuaded, please file as many bug reports as you can - not just in the Wine bugzilla, but with your distro, the unofficial ATI bugtracker, and any other ATI related feedback area you can find. They need as much data as possible to know where they should concentrate their fixes.
