Portal Menu Text missing!

Post by r2rX »

Hi guys,

I've installed Portal, but the menu text is missing. I'm not quite sure why and how to fix it.

I'm using an ATi Radeon 5870, with the Catalyst 10.6 drivers installed and Wine v1.2 rc5.

Any help is appreciated. :)

winetricks riched20

If that works, please file a bug report.

Thanks for the response, James.

Unfortunately, it didn't work. I downloaded wintetricks and installed the riched20 through it (via the MS server)...but the fonts are still missing.

...any other suggestions?

winetricks corefonts.

If that does not work, run your program from a terminal session, capture
a log file and post it to someplace like pastebin.com. I'm suspecting
it will be large.

I just installed Portal and the menu appeared just fine for me.

Below are my Wine and video specs. I do play in an emulated desktop, if
I don't I lose my dual display and have to reboot to get it back.

Wine Version - 1.2-rc5

ATI HD4350 512MB GDDR3

Following taken from the Catalyst Control Panel Information page and was
auto installed by Ubuntu 10.04:

Driver Packaging Version - 8.723.1-100408a-098580C-ATI
2D Driver Version - 8.72.11
Catalyst Control Center Version - 2.12
RandR Version - 1.3

Yeah, for some reason, Portal's menu dosen't render for me.
Maybe it's because I instaled it outside of Steam (Steam is EVIL and full of DRMs!).

Anyway!
I use a Nvidia 7300GT card with the 185 drivers.
I'm on Wine 1.2 rc5

I was unsure I a bug had been filled about that or not, so I preferred to leave it as it is.

My drivers are as follows:

Catalyst Version - 10.6
Driver Packaging Version - 8.723.1-100406a-099494C-ATI
2D Driver Version - 8.74.4
Catalyst Control Center Version - 2.13
RandR Version - 1.3

Well, here's the log on pastebin:

http://pastebin.com/dNARmvV6

Here, James.....the log consists of the game running for about 10 seconds.....

Looking forward to resolving this. :)

Lot's of d3d fixme's, but I do have one question: Are you running this
as ROOT? If so, this is a discouraged practice because it can cause
programs not to run properly.

If you have not filed a bug report, please do so. Also, please advise
if there is a demo or trial version that will replicate the problem.

Thank you.

AFAIK, wine won't let you run ANYTHING as root.
Well, it was the case last time I tried.

No, I do not run WINE or Catalyst Control Center as 'root'...especially WINE. The D3D tweaks you mentioned; what/which tweaks are these?

Ok. Just confirming as one of the messages contained "ROOT".

In order to get some programs running, partial code implementations are
installed. These are referred to as 'stubs'. Some additional programs
require more code that is provided. That is why you get fixmes. They
do not indicate there are problems, but may indicate your particular
program needs a more through implementation of the Windows API calls to
run.

This is why I asked that you first look for a bug report for your
program or these functions and if one does not exist create one. If one
does exist, please vote on the bug as this will indicate more than one
person or program is affected.

You might also want to look in our Applications Database for an entry
for this program and see if there are 'how-tos' that made it work or if
there is a current rating for the program.

Well, i've looked through the info on the AppDB of Portal but to no avail. There seems to be no input concerning this particular problem.

As for the stubs/fixmes, I have no idea where and what to look for in particular; in regards to Portal.

...perhaps you can lead me in the right direction?

I appreciate all the help and input so far.

Looks like it is time for a bug report.

I don't work on d3d code.

Er...

Maybe I'm just really bad at searching, but I still don't see any bug report talkking about that problem...

Would it be good to mention that I installed portal outside of steam?
