Links 2003 & Grand Prix 4

Post by tpreitzel »

Grand Prix 4 doesn't install completely, i.e. the installation terminates just at the end of the process which might be due to the msi installer.

Links 2003 installs, but aborts in the early stages of boot which might be due to copy protection, e.g. SafeDisc.

I'll continually revisit these issues until they work under WINE or another emulator supports them.

It could be a good idea if you could send any output from the terminal :).

If I go through the hassle, do you promise to fix the problems...permanently? ;)

Seriously, I'm running BlueWhite64 so I'll have to spend a bit of time installing the latest version of WINE so it might be a day or two. I was hoping someone else had experience with these two programs on the latter versions of WINE.

Well, one thing is experience and another thing is to know what
happens, program-wise. It isn't the same to say "it doesn't work after
this window or this other thing" rather than pasting some (hopefully)
useful terminal output.

I guess I'm off the thread then, since I'm afraid I can't give any
help without an error to see, nor have I used those two apps in my
life.

Good luck.

You should've checked the AppDB:

I did, but the DB is only marginally useful anyway.

GP4 Installation:

I receive this prompt, "Please insert disk 2 that contains the file Leeme.txt" (accent on the first e)
Unfortunately, GP4 doesn't have two disks, only one CD. On that CD in the root directory is the file, Leeme.txt *, which WINE obviously can not locate. I might be able to extract the content from the CD, add a "corrected" copy of Leeme.txt, and reburn a new CD to see if the installation process proceeds. However, Windows' installations of GP4 proceed normally with the original CD so WINE should also.

* Actually, the spelling on the CD is different as special characters are used in the filename, Léeme.txt .

Links 2003:

Code: Select all

 wine linkslauncher
err:wineboot:pendingRename couldn't get file attributes (2)
fixme:spoolsv:serv_main (0 (nil))
err:service:service_get_status service protocol error - failed to read pipe r = 0 count = 0!
The Links 2003 startup banner appears with the following prompts:

"Please insert the Links 2003 CD #1 in your CD-ROM drive."

The CD is ALREADY installed in the drive and mounted so I simply click "OK" to continue. I receive this prompt, "Links 2003 cannot verify your disk. Please refer to the README for further information."

At this point, I just assume that the error is related to SafeDisc protection.

Do you have your cdrom mapped as a separate drive in winecfg? And do you have at least read access to the cdrom device?

I use "autodetect" which has mapped drive D: to /media/cdrom. Yes, I have permission on the CDROM as I can play numerous other games, e.g. Comanche 4 & NASCAR Racing 2002, on WINE just fine.

That is not what I asked. Having access to the mounted cdrom does not mean you have access to the device. Which device is your cdrom mounted to? (run 'mount' and find your cdrom) then find the cdrom device (/dev/?) And finally run 'ls -l /dev/?' replacing "?" with the device your cdrom is.

What? ;)

As I said, I have read permission on the CDROM device as I can mount and play numerous other games. For your curiosity, the specific device is /dev/sr0 which is a member of group, cdrom. In /etc/group, I am a member of the group, cdrom. OK?

Again you have not answered what I asked. I'm repeating my question again:

If you can't provide the information you are being asked to provide - don't bother asking people for help.

The command, ls -l /dev/sr0, outputs brw-rw---- 1 root cdrom 11, 0 2008-03-31 18:37 /dev/sr0

Grand Prix 4 still aborts with the same error, i.e. the installation process can't find the file with the "special" * characters when using WINE. ;)

Tested: WINE 1.0-rc2

err:wineboot:pendingRename couldn't get file attributes (2)
fixme:spoolsv:serv_main (0 (nil))
err:service:service_get_status service protocol error - failed to read pipe r = 0 count = 0!

This problem continues.

Tested: WINE 1.0-rc2

Grand Prix 4

Post by tpreitzel »

While Links 2003 still has problems, Grand Prix 4 now installs and runs fairly well on WINE 1.1.14 even with ATI's proprietary driver. ;) Impressive work... The only remaining game of significance to to me is Links 2003. Thankfully, Microsoft isn't much of an issue to me any more.

With the newer audio code in WINE (OpenAL), sound is a little flaky with Grand Prix 4, but the game runs awhile just fine before failing (ATI binary driver + WINE 1.1.44).... nice progress.

Furthermore, Links 2003 actually displayed the banner for the Direct3D HAL driver for the FIRST time (ATI binary driver + WINE 1.1.44) so this change is MAJOR progress... The game still crashes shortly thereafter, though.

I'm really looking forward to having both of these games running nicely in the near future. Again, thanks to everyone working on the WINE project!

Update:

Grand Prix 4 plays almost flawlessly with Catalyst 10.6 and WINE 1.2rc3..

HOWEVER, over the past few releases of WINE (audio work), I've noticed that partly through the playback of Grand Prix 4, the audio suddenly stops. Prior to 1.2rc3, Grand Prix 4 used to crash shortly thereafter. However, since WINE 1.2rc3, after the audio stops, Grand Prix 4 continues without crashing ... just without audio. Only restarting Grand Prix 4 restores the audio temporarily before it repeats the pattern.
I get following error from the console:

err:mmtime:TIME_MMTimeStop Timer still active?!

With WINE 1.2rc4, Grand Prix 4 is back to it's old behavior, i.e. the game crashing after the audio stops. Grand Prix 4 does use some weird method of detecting audio acceleration, however. For the game to be playable, this problem must be located and fixed.

Look like a fix that was removed. You'll need to run a regression test
in order to discover which correction (commit) removed the fix.
