Hi all!
A quick question: I just moved from Windows over to Linux, using Backtrack 4, which is based off of Ubuntu if I am not mistaken. One of the programs that I really need to get running, www.magicworkstation.com , really needs one of the later (unstable) releases of WINE to work. Well, so I go to follow the instructions to get the updated version, using the Ubuntu instructions and I get a little stuck. I go to 'software sources' then the 'third-party software' tap, where I am supposed to click on add and then copy and paste 'ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa' into the field. I do that, but then the click-box 'add source' is greyed out, and will not let me add the ppa.
Can anyone help me out?
Thanks in advance -

You need to ask this on the Ubuntu forum. It's a package manager issue, not a Wine issue.RaistlinM531 wrote:I go to 'software sources' then the 'third-party software' tap, where I am supposed to click on add and then copy and paste 'ppa:ubuntu-wine/ppa' into the field. Hmmm, well looks like I might be a little out of luck. Quoting from another forum:
"Its probably expecting a "deb" style apt configuration line, and wont let you enter anything else. As far as Im aware PPAs are Ubuntu only, and they won't work with BackTrack."
So, this then begs the question, is there another way to get it installed? Also as an aside, I see that they are onto a RC2 version. Presumably it won't be that much longer before it turns into another stable release. Once it does, I imagine that I would be able to download the stable release via the package manager and whatnot. If it isn't going to be that long until that hits, it wouldn't be that big a deal to wait it out. Anyone have any idea of a timetable on that?
Thanks in advance again!

There is no set timetable. It will be released when Alexandre Julliard decides it's ready.Anyone have any idea of a timetable on that?

Well, I mean, not to state the obvious, but, obv.
I thought from my question it was clear that I knew that there was no release date per se, I was just hoping to get a general feel. I.E., a month, six months, perpetual RC state, etc. My apologies if that wasn't clear!
And thanks for the links, if I don't get any more ideas I will try to build it myself. Thanks!

[/quote]Again, I will repeat, Wine 1.2 will be released when AJ feels it is
ready for release. Right now, we are in a release cycle. This may take
two weeks or two months. This should NOT take two years (almost the
time between Wine 1.0 and now.) So, (and repeating) there is no
scheduled release date for Wine 1.2. However, if major regression
progress is made, it may be released in the shorter of the two time
periods I stated.
Now for your problem. You will have to build from source, the release
that your program 'likes'. However, I would also request that you
build, but do not install the 1.2-rc2 code and see if the program
'breaks'. If it does, please, please, and please again, file a bug
report. The reason is that we don't want to release Wine 1.2 with any
regressions or regressions we don't know about.
Thank you.
