I-bar "frozen" in text box, The Journal

Post by Asevan »

I just updated Wine to 1.1.43, and I'm now encountering this problem with The Journal software by DavidRM. (Btw, I'm running Ubuntu Karmic with all the latest updates.) This problem did not occur before I updated Wine.

Problem is the visible I-bar won't move in the main text box. It remains on the first space of the line of text that is "in focus." However, it seems my ability to type isn't hindered.

For example, if I press the "end" key and type, my text correctly appears at the end of the line. But the I-bar remains at the beginning. See:

My text appears at the end, where I expect it to, but the I-bar remains at the first space on the line.

Essentially, I can type, but I can't tell where my text will appear until I start typing!

Also, it appears I cannot highlight and cut/copy text unless I highlight ALL of the text with my cursor.

Any ideas?

What version of Wine did you upgrade from?

Hmmm. I've not been able to run a test with a recent version of Wine, but I'm working on it.

I don't know... I download the updates whenever they appear in Ubuntu's Update Manager. Don't always check to see what the new version is. I assume it's just whatever was available before the latest update.

Is there a change log or something I can open to see what I had before?

I managed to find this from the Synaptic Package Manager:

Date: 4-29-10

Code: Select all

wine-gecko (1.1.42-0ubuntu1) to 1.1.43-0ubuntu1~karmicppa1
wine1.2 (1.1.42-0ubuntu1) to 1.1.43-0ubuntu1~karmicppa1
I apparently had 1.1.42, which was installed on the 8th. So the problem appeared in 1.1.43.

Btw, I'm going to upgrade to Ubuntu 10. If that somehow resolves the issue, I'll let you know.

Still no ideas? I've upgraded to Lucid and the problem remains.

Should I just switch back to the previous wine version?

You should try the previous version and if it works, try running a
regression test. At a minimum, please file a bug report after looking
for an existing one.

I'll do that. Could you describe what a "regression test" is?

Nevermind about the regression test. I found a page that explains it.

But can someone tell me where to get 1.1.42 again? I've been digging EVERYWHERE, and all I can find is source code, which is being a royal pain to compile and install. (I'm apparently missing a lot of things, like "X development files," and I'm not geeky enough to figure out all of this.)

I've managed to find a 1.1.42 deb and have installed it. The problem appears to be fixed.

I'll consider a regression test, but seeing as it's working fine for me now, I might not bother. Unless it would be helpful for the developers to fix this problem in future releases.

It will not get fixed unless the problem is located and reported.
