Problems running e-sword on Ubuntu

Post by strange ideas »

Hi. I'm new to Linux and I'm running Gnome 2.28.1 on Ubuntu 9.10. I've never used Wine before but installed it with no problem. I used it to install e-sword, which went fine but now I can't get e-sword to work. I can double-click the link on the desktop or i can single-click the link in the wine section in the applications menu, but nothing happens at all.

Can anyone help me to get this working?

What Wine version (run 'wine --version')?
Run your program from the terminal and post complete output. http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ#get_log

Slightly off topic but there is a fantastic native equivalent to e-Sword.

sudo aptitude install gnomesword

No. It will NOT work with the proprietary format for e-Sword. The two
are NOT compatible and Bibles available for e-Sword will not work under
GnomeSword.

GnomeSword is a Gnome compatible version of the Sword project. (Yes,
I've been at this for a while, about two years and more.)

Try the latest version of Wine, 1.1.43. Print Preview will not work as
well as any of the graphic products. However, you will be able to read
your Bibles. Installing keyed products will require access to a Windows
PC until I get a series of patches accepted into the Wine project.
