Napster.......

Post by beardos »

Hello all.
I'm new(ish) to the world of linux and am about to finally make the plunge and ditch windows completely. However, there's only one program that I want from windows that I use regularly and that is napster for it's music subscription service. It really is a brilliant service as the choice and variety can't really be matched.
Now, I don't know if this is the right area to ask for things, but I was wondering if someone could some how majic it to work. I realise that there music comes in WMA format and has DRM infection in it, but is there anyway of playing these in Linux ATM or are is someone working on it to get it working??
I'd really love it to be the case that it does for then I can finally dump windows forever!

Apparently not too good so far, but you might try installing linux anyway
and experimenting. The new ubuntu lets you install ubuntu through windows
w/o repartitioning. Reading the AppDB, it seems that if you use winetricks
to install WMP10, you may get further, but that's just a guess.

The whole point of M$' DRM is prohibit you using that stuff on anything other then M$' platforms. And they did a good job at it.

So no - no matter what you do and how hard you try, you will not be able to use that on Wine. My suggestion - drop napster and anything with DRM or all your music collection will go the way MSN Music goes (/dev/null).

WMA is patent-encumbered, the only tools that are free and clear of potential
infringement problems with this format are from Microsoft.

You can by boycotting sites that use formats that are defective by design, and
instead use sites that support your rights as a consumer.

Some how I would be double checking your DRM music right now.

Basically if you don't want to loss access to your music at some point in future don't by DRM protected music. There is a way around the MSN music one burn the bugger to CD and rip it back.

WMA has licence servers for its DRM music. Once licence servers go off line that is it.

Basically DRM is going to dump you the question is when.

I can play some .wma files with wmp10 on current wine. Try it yourself:
wget http://kegel.com/wine/winetricks
sh winetricks wmp10
Then add each .wma file individually to the library (they won't show up
until you flick away to video and back).

.wmv plays, too, but the audio and video isn't in sync. (Maarten, got any
magic up your sleeve for that?)
