I installed wine and then windows firefox but I am having trouble installing the add on Silverlight... so I can see if I can watch netflicks... has anyone tried that yet?

Netflicks is using wmp file format with DRM. This can not work on Wine. The only option you have - don't use something defective by design.

I've heard a rumour someone is working on silverlight for wine? Is this true?

Well, looking at the archive of changelogs and bugs.winehq.org, there doesn't seem to be anything particularly indicating this. Perhaps you were thinking about the Moonlight project, which is a (limited working) Linux version? Surely there are people working on that...
