Wine and Talisman Online in Ubuntu 9.04
Hello, I have Ubuntu and Vista in my laptop... I'm trying to use Vista the least bit possible, but I have a game there that I haven't been able to use with Wine...
Talisman Online's steps for playing are usually these:
1. Create an account and download client.
2. Install client and open it.
3. Click Enter so client can check if there's a new patch.
4. Then click 'Enter Game', at this step Client will open a new window and the previous one will dissapear eventually.
5. In this new window you'll be promted to write your username and pw...
6. Etc... irrelevant steps.
I've done all of that in Vista... But I tried in Ubuntu as well... I used Wine to install Talisman in ubuntu, it asked me to authorize Wine to install some other stuff called Gecko that it needs for the application to run... Then I clicked Enter, then Enter Game... When I do that, It shows a message saying: 'This application can't run on a Virtual Machine'.
I have Ubuntu 9.04
I use Wine 1.1.2.6
Talisman Online's patch version is 1553
My Graphic's info is: VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile 4 Series Chipset Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 07)
I need somebody to help me please. But I'm just starting to use Linux, so please, use basic terms so I can understand you better... And if you can't do that, still write your suggestions and I'll look it up.
Thanks in advance.

Looks like it's using some sort of anti-cheat protection. Most of those don't work on Wine.slaughtermania wrote:When I do that, It shows a message saying: 'This application can't run on a Virtual Machine'.

Oh, hi... thank you for your reply...
What you say about anti-cheat makes me think about cracks and stuff like that, and i don't know if that's what you mean... But in case it is, this game doesn't use anything like that since it's completely free.
If by anti-cheat you mean that the program has something that just makes it impossible to run on Ubuntu, well, as far as I could see on AppDB, it is possible to make it work, but I just can't seen to find the way.

don't know anything about the game itself
the wine app database has info here clicky
notice the rating deteriorates as the game version progresses
note in the wine app database it's last listed as garbage, and says
'1534 Some content updates and added a new anti-hack software, that prevents the game from running.'
whereas the previous version (1461) still has platinum status
so can you install the 1461 version? or 1390?
there is a thread in the talisman forums clicky
though there have been no posts for a while
other less promising threads here clicky & clicky
the threads demonstrate some interesting aspects of their community
there is a download of a previously working version (1461) here clicky

Copy-protection and anti-cheat protection are two separate things. Former prevents noobs from easily copying an application. Later attempts to stop people from breaking application itself.slaughtermania wrote:But in case it is, this game doesn't use anything like that since it's completely free.
Few most known examples:
Copy protection: Starforce, SecuROM, SafeDisk
Anti-cheat: GameGuard, PunkBuster
