Cannot install Matlab 5.3 R11

Hi everybody:
Thanks for reading.

I'm a Linux Debian Lenny user. I'm trying to install Matlab 5.3 R11 through wine-1.0.1-174-gc4039bd. The SETUP.EXE runs correctly.

The problem is when I enter the PLP (Personal License Password) required. I'm sure that the PLP is correct, but "matlab says not". The message is:
"The PLP you have entered is incorrect. Check your PLP starts with the release number (11) and then reenter it". And, of course, I cannot continue the installation.

What is happening?
Do I have to set up anything in wine to install Matlab 5.3?

Old wine is old.
Try seeing if 1.1.26 works.

I think not.
I don't know exactly what happens but is very rare. Finally I installed it on the WinXP Operating System and works! (of course, with the same PLP).

What happens to wine

Matlab is a large complicated program. You should try to use the Linux
version if possible. (I'm not sure if it requires another license
though)

(You could also try Octave / Scilab, but Octave is a bit limited
compared to Matlab and Scilab's language is not directly compatible)

I agree but I don't have any copy of that.

I tried Octave. The problem was that I have some matlab programs that are not directly compatible with Octave, so I have no alternative but using matlab.

Octave seem to work fine for basic programs (The user-interface suck
though) It has problems with many (if not most) programs using Matlab
toolkits.

Scilab is similar to Matlab with similar toolkits (at least for the
image processing / electronic engineering applications that I was
interested in), but uses a different language.

Just some notes: Matlab's avaliable toolkits differ between platforms.
(e.g. The Image Acquisition Toolbox is only available for Windows).
This means that running MATLAB under Wine might still be handy in some
cases.
