no game seems to work with wine

hey guys
i got ubuntu 9.04
and i got wine so i can play a few of my games
but none seem to work but only one
and the only one that works is star wars Jedi knight Jedi out cast
all of the games that don't work are here:
Max Payne error:no zbuffer formats found
star wars battle front 1&2 don't start at all
star craft starts but is very slow and lags
star wars eaw does not start at all
star wars republic commando does not start at all

any one know why this is happening
i got a nvidia geforce 4 mx 440 se pci 64mb
all these games work fine in windows ME
driver version is :96.43.10

which version of wine do you use?
If it's the one from the "default" Ubuntu repository (1.0.1), you
might want to test the latest release (1.1.25).

well i looked in
synaptic package manager
one package said wine and said the version was 1.1.25
so i guess i got the newest one
i know i install wine by my self so i don't think its using Ubuntu repository

You need to post terminal output from each game and also add your os
and graphics card info. Read the wine faq on how to do this. Without
that there is nothing anyone can do to help since none of us are
sitting at your pc.

well i got a Aopen Nvidia Geforce 4 MX 440 SE PCI 64MB (A4)
(what graphics info you want ?)
the OS is ubuntu 9.04

today i tried gun metal
it started then said unsupport graphics card
game works fine in WINDOWS ME and on the wine data base it says it should work

it appears i got some graphics card problem

Are you using the nvidia proprietary driver? If not this is your
problem. Also to use this you need a 96.43.11 driver because that is
the latest to support your card. If you are using the nv driver you
will have no 3d acceleration and if you are using the nouveau driver
you will have some 3d acceleration but also a lot of display bugs.

when i turned desktop effects on it, install its on nvidia driver
desktop effects work
(not so well but i got to go to the res 1024x748 and put effects on and then go back to 1280x1024 or it will say cant put desktop effects on or some thing)

so it looks like i got the right drivers

one thing i did do is
i installed wine first and then the nvidia drivers

Your Graphics card is ancient, I mean really ancient.
It doesn't even support directX 9.

I think Wine is forced to use some opengl features in software (that's why the games that work are so slow) and some features aren't available at all (Z-buffer). So if you upgrade your graphics card to any newer graphics card that might solve your problem.

why would i do that
the games work fine in windows
am not buying a new graphics card

if wine is not gonna work then what else can i try instead then?

I successfully used starcraft with wine on that card over 4 years ago
and dozens of versions of wine. Before that I used a Gforce2 card and
2003xxxx or 2004xxxx versions of wine. And even that performed good
with starcraft and wine. At one point however things got slower and
the fix was to go full screen at 640x480 to have good performance.
Back then I used the following shell scripts to do that:

These started a new X session accessible by pressing ctrl-alt-f8 and
