Game that worked in .24 doesn't in .25 and .26

Post by doctordruidphd »

I have a game (The Witcher Enhanced) that worked in 1.1.24, but does not in .25 or .26. It dies on startup with a black screen, and CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE (killing the X server) appears to be the only escape. In addition, attempting to run in with .26 makes changes in the .wine directory I use for the game, such that the only way to get it to run in .24 again is to reload the .wine directory from backup. This is 64-bit kUbuntu 9.04 and 9.10 (same problem in both versions). I do not compile wine, but use the versions provided in the ubuntu repositories, and from the archives on winehq. I took a look at the "regression test" page, and realistically I don't think I can do that -- as I said, I don't compile it. I would like to see the problem fixed, and I would like to help in fixing it, but I am not a programmer or engineer. Is there another way to get meaningful diagnostics?

Forgot to mention:
Video cards are dual NVIDIA 9800GT sli,
using NVIDIA 185.18.14 driver (the latest on the NVIDIA site).
OpenGL effects seem to work properly.
Compositing is disabled when running games.

Launch your program in a terminal and generate a log.
Please see the FAQ on how to do this

Also, be prepared to run a regression test.

http://wiki.winehq.org/RegressionTesting

is the Wiki page which describes the process.

Different game, same error

Post by L1ttl3J1m »
what happens if you disable wbemprox.dll in wine-1.1.26

(so run the app like WINEDLLOVERRIDES="wbemprox=""" wine game_name.exe )
I'm trying to play "The Curse of Monkey Island" and getting the same error message (dsalsa:IDsDriverBufferImpl_SetVolumePan), but slightly different symptoms.

Starting the game with this command fixed the problem for me, so the problem does appear to be in around wbemproxy.dll somewhere.

This may have been fixed a long time ago. Can you try running this with
the Wine 1.2 stable release?

Well, for a while at least. It's happening again but further along in the game.

Nooooo, that's a bit beyond me yet :) I'm on the latest git version (24 hours old), standard install. wine-1.3.0-166, if that's any help.

It only happened once - Trying to make it happen again now.

Actually, my IDsDriverBufferImpl_SetVolumePan errors are at the very beginning of the game, but not when the symptom I'm having happens. Sorry, it's probably not all that related then. Although bypassing the wbemproxy.dll does reduce the problem I'm having to a random intermittent bug.
