problems when trying to run galactic civilizations on ubuntu

hey here's something what i can't solve:

i installed galactic civilizations ultimate blahblah and then tried to run it. well the screen goes blank and yay but then it's just crashes back to my beautiful desktop and totally pisses me off.

any hints/suggestions?

ps. ubuntu 7.10

What video card/drivers? Can you attach terminal output? Have you
tried running it in a virtual desktop?
