What if I replace the WINDOWS folder in WINE with that of a genuine windows installation?
Would it work?

No, Quite a few Windows DLLs need to have the Wine version...

(I though this is in the FAQ, but I can't find it..)

If you do not set DLL overrides there is a small chance that you will
not completly break Wine, but thisis unlikely
