VNC/XEPHYR/8bit/256 colour mode and wine

Post by wine000019 »

i did some research about old games on new computers; found a link pointing me to vnc or xephyr; downloaded both, couldnt even get vnc to function, xeph did ok, except for the purpose to which i wanted it for. the game will not even start in wine; its warcraft 2; before i used xeph i could start it until i tried bnet; then colour mode kicked me out; now i cannot start it, whats the deal? also xephyr doesn't work the way the 250 colour workaround on winehq described; so i went to another site and copied there command and ran wine from the new 640x480 window xephyr opened; which gave me a debugging script; not the game.

Same problems. Tried xephyr and the game wouldn't start at all. I'd get some errors and it would lock up.

There is no need for vnc/xephyr. In case of warcraft II (the windows version) just look at appdb for starcraft on how to run it in opengl mode on modern videocards. It should work fast on Nvidia.

Doesn't help much on the hundreds of other games though, like "Lords of The Realm II".

The use of Xephyr/VNC is only a workaround for depth conversion which X doesn't offer. Wine doesn't run well for gaming or perhaps not at all these days in those Xservers. Selection of opengl + rendertargetlockmode=readtex can help a lot and would perform better than a 8-bit X. Sure it might still not be great if your game does evil things but that are limitations of Wine in combnation with X. Some of the issues could be fixed but those require a lot of hacking time.
