CounterStrike Source and Asus Ati Radeon HD 4850 512MB

Post by LameAiM »

Hi!

I installed wine in Kubuntu and afterwords i installed steaminstaller from my CSs CD! I could execute both steam and CSs very fast and without problems. I veryfied that my ATI drivers were properly installed, which they where. So no problems there :) !
Then I configured my video options in CSs (16:10 1680 x 1050) and started up the game, but then I got some strange problem with the screen. There where black and grey lines flickering all over the screen, and I couldn't see the players arms only the guns :(. In the background I could discern the map!
Are there som configs you have to do with V-sync or something like it?

Does anyone have a clue why this happens, and if there are some solutions to it?

I have tried wine in Ubuntu with an Nvidia 6800 GT card without these problems, but instead I had bad fps and poor resolution.

Regards

If you still have your nvidia card, try with Wine 1.1.17, it performs a lot better than previous versions of Wine with CS:S.

Overall ATI works a lot worse than nvidia, be it because of driver bugs and or less well tested code in Wine. Might be a good idea to sell your new ATI card and buy nvidia to avoid the headache.

Maybe you would want to do some research work on your ATI card first before shelling out more money for a new card. ATI is a bit more complicated but i guess it's worth your while to learn more about it. There are tweaks out there or switches you may need to turn on to get it running as it should.

Good luck

BTW, I did get CS to work on my machine but i am using an NVIDIA FX 5 series card which is by all means a legacy Card. In fact it is no longer supported by Interpid. Never the less I got it going after painstakingly doing a lot of research work.

Anyway, the only major tweak I applied when I ran CS is to switch video rendering to Hardware, not Software which happens to be the default. I did change the video resolution to 1028x768 to work well with my equally old Monitor :). Then it worked fine after that.

new nvidia cards aren't all that expensive, I think I saw a 9800GT 512MB for US$99 - no amount of "tweaks" or "switches" will fix the bugs experienced with ATI cards.

The thing is that with my old Nvidia 6800 GT I could get CSs to work, but instead it was a bit "laggy". Very low fps. When I start it now with my Radeon HD 4850 I can see through all the lines that the graphic is wonderful, besides all the black/gray flashing lines and no arms on my caracter :(. I think maby maby with some tweaking and good luck I could get it to work.
Besides I got Hardware set in wine config. Could it be something I should set in ATI Catalyst Center or in CSs Video options. I got the Drivers from AMD as you already figured out ;) Should I try with the open ones, through Kubuntus repositories?

Thank you so much for your replies, If you have more suggestions PLZ post them :)

It is said that the CS:S "flashing lines" issue will be soon resolved by the catalyst driver. But make sure you have installed the latest wine version :)

Hi gxf!

Today I upgraded to wine 1.1.8, but now it crasces instead :(
I get so far that I can choose teams, and now there's no flickering/flashing lines no more. But when I choose my team then it crasces. I'm "GOOGLING" about it as we speak. :)

I have the same problem with ubuntu 8.1, wine, and a ATi 4830 with
counter-strike. has anyone found a solution? will my updater auto-detect new
proprietary drivers?
