Will latest .deb pkg for Ubuntu Intrepid work on Ubuntu Jaun

Post by Nigel Henry »

I'm trying to help someone to get the e-Sword windows app working under Wine.
The Wine package available on Ubuntu Hardy, and Intrepid will not display the
bible text, although the main window for e-Sword opens.

I've installed the latest development version of Wine (.deb) for Ubuntu
Intrepid, and although there are still a whole bunch of errors that I have to
OK, eventually the e-Sword app opens, and the bible text is displayed.

Running winetricks, and installing some stuff, I have also gotten rid of some
of the error messages, when starting the e-Sword app.

The latest Wine pkg's for Ubuntu, are only for Hardy, and Intrepid.

The question, as this guy is using Ubuntu Jaunty (alpha) is, is there any
possibility that the Intrepid version of Wine will install on his Jaunty
install, or will I have to help him to install Wine from a source tarball?

Anyone got the .deb from winehq for Ubuntu Intrepid to also install on Ubuntu
Jaunty?

Thanks for any suggestions.

There is no such thing. Mike Myers, who writes e-Sword, will not port
it to any other platform than Windows.

There is a program called Sword, that does have ports for many operating
systems.

I personally use gnomesword2. I have no idea about any WINE ports... but I find gnomesword2 to be effective and it is a linux native.

Well, I've just installed Gnomesword 2.2.3 on Ubuntu Intrepid 8.10, and the
bible text is in arabic, and there do not appear to be any alternative
translations. Now I'm not being sarcastic here, but I don't read Arabic text,
and the person I'm trying to help wants the Good News bible in English, as I
don't think he reads Arabic text either.

It's all a bit bizarre. I install Gnomesword, and when I open Gnomesword the
header says "Smith & Van Dyke Arabic Bible", and the text is in Arabic.

This is totally OT on the wine list, so let's end the thread here. I'll
continue to help the guy to get the Good News bible translation, by
installing from a wine source tarball for his Kubuntu Jaunty install.
