Application Database?

Hey Everyone,
I was looking at the App Database :
http://appdb.winehq.org/
I was wondering if the rankings for Guild Wars (Platinum) and Everquest (Gold) and other programs etc. were applicable to the Mac OS X platform as well as Ubuntu Linux. When I click on information, the distributions only list Unbuntu and Linux systems.

Simple answer, no. MacOSX results may be vastly different than those obtained from Linux due to broken support in Apple's X11 product. The only method you can use to determine whether or not a particular game will work in Wine for MacOSX is to install and run it. Please also be aware that PowerPC Macs will not natively run Intel based programs.

Also, you may have better results with a Mac native version of the programs. Quake and its ilk are programs that have such versions.

If there are no test results for Mac OS X for a particular app or game, it simply means no one using that Mac OS X has bothered to submit test results for that app or game. As to how an app or game might work on your system, the only way to know for sure is to try it yourself, and that's true for all systems.

Ok, thanks for the replies. I will try to install this program when I get my mac in the next week. I am entirely new to the Mac OS and Wine. Does anyone have a simple guide to how to install wine and a program. This is all new, and seems a little confusing.

Simple. That is the key to using a Mac. There are two methods of installing a program, and Wine actually has versions for both methods. The first method is to find an installation package and use Apple's installer. This is the method used by Zach Drayer for his builds of Wine. The second is to find a 'drag and drop' installer and that is the method used by Mike Kronenberg. The technical name for Wine for the Mac is DarWine (for Darwin Wine). However, there has not been much done with this project for over a year.

This is all new, and seems a little confusing.

Welcome to the world of the MacIntosh. Yes, it is strange when coming from Windows, but I've had a Mac running for over a week without problems (and it would be months, but I keep on messing with it and installing software updates which in some cases I highly recommend for security purposes.)

Please keep the comments coming about Wine for MacOSX. I know about several problems, but they are not Wine's but more Apple's.

Thanks for the encouraging reply. I am hoping to have my first Macbook by the end of next week. I was wondering, what version would you suggest for a newbie like me to install. A drag and drop type? If so, would you have a link to this. I have noticed that there is no link for a Mac OS X version of WineHQ on their website. If you have any other tips for a Wine Newbie and a Mac Newbie, feel free to share. Such as how to set things up and get things started in Wine. PS - Also, is wine easy to uninstall if I change my mind about wanting to use it later? Is it safe to use. Can I be sure it won't mess anything up?
