Strange error

Post by dow »

Hello, I'm having a strange error pop up when I try to install programs under wine. It happens whether I type wine APPNAME in terminal or if I right-click and select Open with "Wine Windows Program Loader." I just get a window that says, "Error. The file is damaged. Re-obtain a valid file."

I've downloaded programs from the source webpages, and have even copied programs from a windows machine where the exe installed correctly. I don't know where to go to look at error logs in Wine.

Initially I thought that there might ba a problem with Wine, so I removed it and reinstalled it. It appears to be working correctly, as I can get to Notepad, winecfg, and uninstaller.

Can anybody give me a hand?

Better yet: Application name? It may take a little research in the Applications Database for the application for hints/tricks to get the application to run.

None.

A couple of different versions of Canon DPP, (dpp351en.exe, dpp352en.exe, and the european one that I don't have the name of at hand. Also the Canon EOS utility, eu251en.exe). I had DPP working sort-of, and then tried to uninstall it, and didn't have luck there, so I used the sledgehammer method of deleting the directories. That certainly didn't help either. So THEN, I thought I'd get the latest version of wine, so I went and installed the Git build, which generated some odd things there (sorry I didn't document it). That's when I started seing the error window, instead of an installer dialog window. So, eventually, I went into synaptic and completely removed wine and then added the new version through the ubuntu package manager.

I'm currently running ubuntu 8.10, and have installed wine 1.1.13.

if I'm really lucky, I'll get to take another look at it tonight, but so far, it looks like it'll be at least tomorrow before I can go back to it.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I tried to install the dpp352en.exe and the eu251en.exe files from two different sources. Both were downloaded directly from Canon's website, and installed on a windows computer, and I also downloaded them directly to the linux pc. In all cased, the error apparently comes up before the installer actually starts. For comparison, I downloaded a version of ccleaner, that I use on my windows pc for system maintenance, and it installed fine with Wine.

That's not the correct sledgehammer approach...remove ~/.wine instead.

Thanks, austin. I did that after I tried the first sledgehammer. Sorry, I forgot to put that in my previous post.

Canon EOS has an AppDB entry: http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.p ... &iId=14473

Thanks, dimesio. I was aware of that, but was going to try it anyway. Call me stubborn if you want. Regardless, I'm not concerned so much with the program not running at this point. What concerns me is that Wine won't even try to install it, or the other programs listed. It just returns the same error.

Is there some place where an error log is produced, so that I could look at that? As I said before, I got no feedback from terminal when I tried the install through there, except the next $ prompt.

What's the URL for your program(s)?

Select the right-hand tab, "Drivers & Downloads," Then select "Windows XP" from the "Select OS" window. You'll then see a long list of files, including DPP 352, DPP 351, DPP 341, and a slew of other programs. When you click on any of these, you have to agree to the licensing terms to download the file.

This doesn't work.

You saying you want to install drivers for something? That won't work - Wine does not support hardware drivers of any kind.

No, look further down. It's not the driver that I"m trying to install.

It's Digital Photo Professional 3.5.2 Updater for Windows {dpp352en.exe). It's a photographic tool for Canon Digital SLR cameras.

There's already an AppDB post on it, but i was trying ti make it work anyway.

Specifically, I'm concerned about the popup error that I reported in post #1 at the top of this thread.

This doesn't work.
Or were you saying that the link doesn't work? If so, then try this:

http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/contr ... elid=10464

THEN select "drivers *& downloads," etc., etc.

In case you missed part of the requirements:
3. Target Applications (required for update)
One of the following applications must be installed.
-Digital Photo Professional
-EOS Viewer Utility
-File Viewer Utility
-RAW Image Task
Do you have any one of those installed?

Please see this info:
The Windows 'update' is actually the whole thing, it checks for the presence of particular registry keys before installing.

Create these registry keys before installing the update and you should be good to go:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\EOS Utility
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\DPP
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Canon\ZoomBrowser EX

Reference:http://photography-on-the.net/forum/sho ... ostcount=3
This info works on windows xp. The installer looks for the appropriate registry key right after the installation routine begins. If it sees it, then the install proceeds as normal. If not, then it halts and gives a message saying that it's an update, and that you have to have one of these programs already installed for the "update" to continue.

These registry keys are already in place. This allows you to bypass the installation of the original programs from the distribution cd. I had this working on my ubuntu computer, with an earlier version of DPP, although it didn't work 100%. THEN, I started messing with Wine, and got the whole thing messed up, which required me to remove wine and reinstall as mentioned above.

Okay, I went back to the distribution disk, and installed dpp version 1.6.1. However, when it got to the end of the installation, it asked if I wanted to restart. I said no, as I had an email open, and then the installer gave me an "installation failed" message. However, the program will run. Unfortunately, I cannot upgrade to a newer version, nor can I uninstall version 1.6.1. When I try t run an upgrade, it begins to extract files, and then says,
You cannot install Digital Photo Professional on this computer. Verify whether the required environment for use has been satisfied. Cancel installation.
If I try to uninstall version 1.6.1 through the wine uninstaller, nothing at all happens.

Thoughts?

At the present time, most program uninstallers do not work with Wine.
The process that I use is:

mv $HOME/.wine{,.backup}
wine notepad

This will move the current .wine user directory structure to
.wine.backup. Running wine notepad will create a new .wine and attempt
to execute notepad (which should run.)

Then you can attempt to install your Canon program again.

If the only program in the current Wine user space is the Canon program,
you can use:

rm -rf $HOME/.wine
wine notepad

Please note that the first line of code must be entered EXACTLY as
written or you can cause great damage to your Linux/UNIX installation.
It can delete user files and does so with no recovery possible (in most
cases.)
