Aspire One?

Post by chs1010 »

alright, i think i installed wine on my new aspire one, the problem is, i used the root, yum wine way, is this how you install it?

also, i want to make sure it does work with the aspire one (that uses linpus, fedora based)?

and then after i installed wine, i tried to install a game, which i then tried to load up and it didnt work, is there a special way of installing games through wine?

ok, thats all the questions for now, mainly because i cant really remember what i was gonna say now, there was something else lol, if i think of it ill post it here

thanks in advance

Should work, might not be a very up-to-date version...

You can check the version with
wine --version
The latest version is 1.12

http://appdb.winehq.org/ has instructions for specific applications

Note: Do not run Wine as root. (You should only need root for
installing Wine itself not for installing any applications on it) Wine
will install applications to the hidden ".wine" directory under your
home directory.

http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ has some general info, you probably want to

That's __really__ old. Upgrade.

Just as you do on windows. 'wine setup.exe'. If there are tweaks,
etc., needed, look in the AppDB.

That would remove the ~/.wine directory, which has your apps and wine
settings. Removing wine itself depends on your os/distribution.

http://wiki.winehq.org/FAQ should have some stuff that's useful

Since Linpus is based on Fedora, you could try the Fedora packages. http://www.winehq.org/site/download

As to how to specifically install on your system, normally I'd tell you to consult your distro's support forum, but Linpus doesn't seem to have one. There is a forum for the Acer Aspire One, so I recommend asking there: http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum/

How to use your distro's package manager is not a Wine issue.

The forum I pointed you to has an entire section for Linux newbies, as well as a bunch of Linux howtos. I suggest you start reading them.

No, Wine supplies its own DirectX support. You should NOT install the
complete DirectX package as it will mung up your Wine user file install.

BTW, you claim to be a College student, but just to point this out, you
really have a problem reading what we are trying to tell you. There is
a great deal of knowledge on both the Aspire web site as well as the
Wine web site. Google and site search engines are way your friend.
Please use them.

well, i thought it best to ask you guys because the things you usually find in google are hard to understand and if someone whos done this can explain it, it will be a lot easier to understand

and no i dont find this easy, mainly because im new to linux and i bet you had some difficulty understanding it unless you started on a linux system, i however came over from windows

Not all of us use Fedora type OS's, so for us, we have no way to know
how to help you.

You can make an account on the AppDB, but it won't let you submit
reports for 0.9.47.

Reporting bugs for a version a year and a half old is pretty useless.

If you can use the Fedora packages, upgrading should be as simple as adding the Wine repository and installing the latest version through your package manager.

If you don't know how to add a repository in your distro, you need to ask more experienced users of your distro how to do it. If any exist, they would be found on the Acer Aspire One forum, and that's where you should be asking this question.
